| GMC's Cobalt Radioactive machine non-functional | | | Et Report
Jammu, Oct 22: Exposing the hallow talk of government to provide critical medical facility to the Cancer patients, who are dependent on Cobalt Radioactive Machine to fight the disease, one of the machine is non-functional at Government Medical College (GMC) for last one year. The approximate cost of the equipment with necessary spare parts is Rs 1.70 crore. The allocation of funds has been sanctioned by Central Government but not yet released. About two machines were installed in Oncology Department of medical college, which cater to needs of about 2000 patients who visit to the Department for radiotherapy. Sources said that in some cases even those in critical conditions are made to wait for their turn at the premier medical institute of the state for days together. Sources said that failure of college management to pursue the case with central government has led to blocking of Rs 1.70 crore rupees sanctioned to replace Cobalt radioisotope. At the moment only one machine is functional, which is proving insufficient to deal with the patients. Cobalt-60 is a radioisotope that is mostly used in the medical field. It is used to kill cancerous cells, which can be implanted directly on or near mutated cells to help stop the spread of cancer. Sources said despite crores of rupees being spent on construction of new hospitals, no consideration is given to strengthen the existing infrastructure in the government hospitals which could save lives of thousands of people. Despite awareness schemes and campaigns launched by the state government to make people aware about cancer, the number of patients suffering from different types of this killer disease has been on rise in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in Jammu province. As per the figures available, the number of patients suffering from different types of cancer- which used to be in between 400 to 500 per year in 90s-is now touching nearly 2000 per year in Jammu region. According to the data, there were 1385 cancer patients in the year 2008, 1450 in 2009, 1500 in 2010 and 1600 in 2011. In the year 2012, this number has swelled to 1965. |
