| Omar, Kamaal pulling in different directions | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 5: On Monday, National Conference working president and Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the party additional secretary and Omar Abdullah's uncle, Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal made two very interesting statements. Omar Abdullah, who spoke extensively on the issue of the accession of the state to India, made a categorical statement that he is very much part of the UPA and that there is no question of the NC becoming part of the so-called third front. "He has nothing to do with any Third Front. I am with the UPA," he, inter-alia, said while talking to reporters on the occasion of the opening of the biannual durbar in Jammu. He also talked about the BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and said that it would be wrong on our part to deny any influence of Modi in the election". Interestingly, Mustafa Kamaal also made a statement on Narendra Modi and the kind of relationship the NC will have with the BJP in case the BJP comes back to power in New Delhi. In fact, he indirectly said that the BJP is destined to recapture power in New Delhi and said without mincing words that the NC would be more than willing to work with Narendra Modi. "Sheikh sahib used to say that in Delhi we have to sit with the government at the right side. If Modi becomes Prime Minister, NC will support him in the interest of the people of the state. National Conference will develop a 'harmonious' relationship with him. We will not barter our stand neither will we compromise our principles but we will support him in the larger interests of the state," he said, and added that "any government in Delhi will not take any decision in the parliament which would be against the nation". "Any government that will emerge at Delhi will get support of National Conference in the coming time. The Parliament members of NC can support Modi in Delhi and that he would get NC's support in terms of issues and development," Mustafa Kamaal also said while talking to a local news gathering agency What Mustafa Kamaal said was completely inconsistent with the stand of Omar Abdullah on the BJP. Omar Abdullah has been repeatedly saying since 2002 that the NC will never work with the BJP. Omar Abdullah has on occasions more than one condemned the BJP and Narendra Modi and held them responsible for what the "secularists" murder of Muslims in Gujarat in 2002. The statement of Mustafa Kamaal does suggest that all is not well in the NC. Or should what he said on Monday and what Omar Abdullah has been saying since 2002 be taken to mean that both are working in complete unison and as per a strategy evolved to keep the options open? But one thing is very clear: The Abdullah dynasty is power hungry and it can take U-turn anytime for the sake of power. |
