| Taj's office in GMC yet nothing moves; academic, medical facilities going from bad to worse | | | Syed Junaid Hashmi
JAMMU, Nov 5: Despite Minister for Medical Education Taj Mohiuddin having set-up an office inside the campus of Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, academic as well as medical facilities have been going from bad to worse with no signs of improvements in the very near future. Taj's fantastic ideas have failed to improve the situation. What these ideas have done is that old, worn out walls of GMC Hospital as well as Medical College are being painted over and again. A new lift, whose entry is on way towards mortuary rooms of GMC Hospital, is in operation. Cleanliness continues to be an issue but the old emergency has been put to use again with both the doors open. But inside the college, according to an assessment report of Medical Council of India (MCI), there are no revenue records available to indicate proof of ownership and possession of the land. Hence, Government Medical College (GMC) is set-up on land which belongs to the state government but was never transferred to the Health and Medical Education department for construction of college as well as hospital. Medical Education unit has no regional centre for training of teachers for teaching students. However, college claims of having two trained teachers. Besides the unit has been set-up on the land whose adequate revenue record is not available with the state government. There are no audio-visual aids available in the lecture theatres of medical education unit of both college and hospital. There is no common room neither are separate toilets attached with the rooms for both girls and boys. Animal house has inadequate space and requires air conditioning. The same has not been done. Central library, where medicos sit for reference, revision and study is suffering from shortage of space. Total seating capacity of library is 210. Hence, the library does not fulfil norms set-up by Medical Council of India (MCI). It has 3 rooms for students with combined seating capacity of 210. There is 1 room for interns/residents and one for staff members. Both have seating capacity to accommodate 30 persons. Staff in the library is scarce. The library is without a librarian, has just 1 Deputy/ Assistant Librarian. 13 other officials are working in the library but they are of no help to the students since most of them are working outside the library despite being part of library staff. There are no arrangements for making slides/photography of patients wherever required. Both central photography as well as audio-visual units are not available. There are inadequate number of computer terminals. The basic need of students in the present times is internet. This facility is not available. There is no space for sports and recreation facilities. There is no playground in the campus. There are around 1558 teaching beds in four hospitals namely Medical College (850), SMGS (550), Chest Disease (60) and Psychiatry (30). One of the serious defects in the wards of medicine and allied specialities is that male and female patients are admitted in the same wards. Though it is required that there should be separate male and female wards in the surgical and medical indoor departments. Obstetrics and Gynaecology departments have lowest number of beds with 183 and 77 beds respectively. Teaching area is inadequate. Inside the wards, clinical demonstration areas are not well defined. There is urgent need for identifying separate teaching area. According to records available with Early Times, College was assessed on March 25, 2011. Prior to this, assessment was done on September 30, 2009. |
