| Kamaal backtracks from his statement on Modi | | Politics of U-turns | | Bashir Assad
Srinagar, Nov 5: In less than twenty-four hours the National Conference leadership including the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah have backtracked from their statements. First it was the Chief Minister who denied having "ever questioned" the state's accession with India and termed Jammu and Kashmir an 'integral part of the Union of India'. "I have never used the word `conditional' or `incomplete'. Check the Assembly record and see what I have said. You should not put words in my mouth", Omar said while replying to a media query about his earlier remarks about accession of Jammu and Kashmir with Union of India. Today his uncle and additional general secretary of National Conference, Dr. Mustafa Kamaal, backtracked from his statement and ruled out his party supporting Modi led government if he comes to power at the Centre. Kamaal said that any decision on the future alliances would be taken by the party high command. "In principle, we can't support BJP because it did not pay any heed to the autonomy resolution passed by the state legislature," Kamaal said in a statement. Significantly Kamaal had said on Monday that if Narendra Modi becomes the Prime Minster, National Conference will develop the 'harmonious' relationship with the latter. Kamaal had said, "Sheikh sahib used to say that in Delhi we have to sit with the government at the right side, if Modi becomes Prime Minister NC will support him in the interest of the people of the state. Kamaal had further mentioned that the Parliament Members of NC can support Modi in Delhi and that he would get NC's support in terms of issues and development. "We will not barter our stand neither will we compromise our principles but we will support him in the larger interests of the state." He further added that any government in Delhi will not take any decision in the Parliament which would be against the nation. "We won't, however, compromise on our stand, neither will we compromise our principles, but we will support him (Modi) in the larger interest of the state," Kamaal had said. |
