| HC seeks status on retrieving SPS Museum items from Shimla, Lucknow | | | S Sabaqat
Srinagar, Nov 26: The Jammu and Kashmir High Court today directed government to file status report within four weeks about retrieving of items from Moti Lal Nehru Children Centre Lucknow (UP) and the State Museum Shimla. A Division Bench of the court comprising Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir and Justice Muzaffar Hussain Attar passed the direction after government informed it measures taken by it in this regard. Regarding the return of 25 coins from Moti Lal Nehru Children Centre (Museum), Lucknow, AAG S A Naik for state informed the court that a response has been received from Museum authorities on October 14 this year. It is stated that it has the Museum has not received any items and such any such items have never been displayed in the Museum. "Director Archieves, has been communicated to send them the copy of the letters/correspondence vide which Moti Lal Nehru Society has received such items," AAG Naik said, adding, "Documentary proof will be given after University of Kashmir and SPS Museum examine the record." Regarding return of items from Shimla Museum, the government informed the court that a reminder has been sent to the concerned authorities and their response was awaited. Regarding 2003 theft of a Holy Quran bearing the seal of Emperor Aurangzeb from the SPS Museum, the court directed Investigation Officer to remain present with case diaries and status of investigation on next date of hearing. The court also closed proceedings against University of Kashmir after Director, Central Asian Museum of the varsity, handed over all 209 objects which were transferred to the it on August 25 1980 from SPS Museum Srinagar. The court was hearing a PIL, filed by General Secretary of Valley Citizen Council (VCC) Imdad Saqi, seeking directions for the protection and conservation of artefacts, monuments and excavation sites here. The PIL states the archaeological excavations and artefacts of Kashmiri's rich heritage have been neglected and alleged that 84 rare coins went missing from the SPS museum. |
