SRINAGAR, Nov 28: The battle lines for the 2014 Assembly elections in Srinagar are now very clear as it is actually PDP leader and former EJAC President Mohammad Khursheed Aalam versus the Abdullah's owing to the name and fame of the former who is the face of the opposition in Srinagar.
Though PDP having a strong rural base has some important faces like Tariq Hameed Kara and MLC Mohammad Ashraf Mir who are rated well, however, Aalam is the real face taking into account his name, fame, muscle and clout.
Observers believe that Khursheed Aalam known for his organizational skills and muscle power is the real threat for ruling National Conference in Srinagar city because Aalam has a strong support base in the entire city and he can really make the battle very interesting and even can change the political discourse in the capital city which is considered the traditional foothold (if not strong hold) of the National Conference.
Observers believe that Aalam having much financial and muscle power could really turn the fortunes for the opposition PDP in Srinagar. They believe that Aalam being a gross root level political activist could do miracles for the opposition PDP. Aalam has a strong network of volunteers and sympathizers all across the Srinagar city and if PDP utilizes his potential to the fullest, it could do wonders for the party.
Meanwhile, PDP sources said that the party leadership is exploring the possibility of fielding Aalam against NC heavy weight, Ali Mohammad Sagar from Khanyar constituency though the former is himself interested in Hazratbal constituency presently represented by Dr. Mustafa Kamaal of National Conference.
A senior PDP leader wishing anonymity told Early Times that he was personally favoring Aalam's candidature from Hazratbal constituency, however, the final decision lies with the party leadership.
The PDP leader said that there was no denying the fact that Aalam has a good support base in many constituencies in the city, however, he could easily register win from the Hazratbal-his home constituency. Another PDP leader said that Aalam could give a tough fight to the NC strongman, Ali Mohammad Sagar and PDP leadership is very keen to see the party flag flying high in Khanyar constituency. He admitted that Aalam is the real face of party in Srinagar who possess all the qualities of a political activist.
Though Khanyar is being considered as a safe NC constituency but PDP particularly Aalam's intrusions in the area is giving sleepless nights to the NC circles. "If PDP fields Aalam from Khanyar against Sagar it will be one of the most interesting battle of the 2014 Assembly polls considering both of them are strongmen with huge muscle and financial clout," said an observer. Aalam - known for his organizational capabilities and immense muscle power can turn the table, immaterial whether he is fielded from Khanyar or Hazratbal. |
