| Locals panicked by frequent forest fires | | Suspect forest officials- smugglers nexus | | early times report Kishtwar, Dec 17: Increase in number of fire incidents reported from different parts of erstwhile Doda district has frightened people of Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban as the forest fires have directly started affecting health of the locals besides destroying the invaluable green gold. In Kishtwar, during last few days, the forest fire has destroyed several green trees, while similar reports were received from various areas of Doda and Ramban District where several green trees were reduced to ashes due to growing forest fire incidents. The people in Kishtwar alleged forest officials and smugglers nexus behind the increasing forest fire incidents. The people alleged that sale of illegal timbers has increased manifold in recent time as forest areas adjoining Kishtwar town including Poochal, Pootinag, Keshwan, Pohi, Bandrina, Trigham, Gudrashnag, Hargadie and other areas situated on the outskirts of Kishtwar town has vanished due to illegal sale of forest timber by the smugglers have close liaison with forest officials. The people alleged that the construction work in Kishtwar has increased manifold in Kishtwar town and its vicinity in last few years and the timber sale by the forest department is far less to cater to the need of the people who constructed their houses in last few year and thus the forest smugglers taking advantage of laxity of forest department supplied timber to cater the need of the people with help from forest employees who were hand in glove with these smugglers. It is worthwhile to mention that Early Times from time to time highlight the forest officials-smugglers nexus in Doda and Kishtwar region, but to utter surprise the senior officials both at departmental level as well as government level fail to initiate a detailed probe or action against its officials promoting sale of illegal timber in erstwhile Doda District. Recently Early Times correspondent was threaten by forest official-police nexus in Bhaderwah of Doda District while following illegal transportation and smuggling of green gold in Bhaderwah. |
