Jammu, Dec 29: The abrupt spurt in militancy activities and increase in infiltration attempts, the situation in the trouble torn state of Jammu and Kashmir throughout 2013 was gloomy with militants and security forces playing hide and seek with each other. However, interesting to note was that despite increase in militant activities less number of militants got killed as compared to the yesteryears but as for the causalities among the security forces it was quite opposite.
While the number of militants killed this year declined to 97 compared to last year's 119, the fatalities suffered by security forces marked over 100 percent increase. 61 security personnel were killed in militancy related incidents during 2013 while in year 2011 and 2012 the number of killed armed personnel's was 47. It was also interesting to note that though the overall violence saw a considerable drop of 30% during the year and some even said that the violence in 2013 was lowest in the last 23 years but the militancy was a major challenge for the security forces.
The strategy of maximum effect with minimum impact adopted by the militants during the year is being seen as the main reason for higher causalities to the security forces. Senior police officials attributed this to the changing strategy which was replicated in Bemina in city outskirts on March 13, when militants in a suicide attack killed five BSF jawans and injured seven others, before one of them being shot dead.
December 3: Security Forces killed divisional commander of Let militant outfit and his two associates in a fierce gun battle in Handwara area of Kupwara District during which two Army personnel were also injured.

September 26: At least 13 persons were killed in twin suicide attacks in the State in the morning of September. A total of 10 people, apart from three militants, were killed during the attacks. The dead include four Policemen and two civilians in Kathua District and four Army personnel, including Lieutenant Colonel Bikramjeet Singh (39) in Samba District.

July 9: Army foiled a major infiltration bid and killed five militants on the LoC in the Keran sector of Kupwara District in the night. GOC of Kupwara based 28 Division of the Army, Major General Lalit Pandey told that eight to nine militants were moving in the forest area about 500 meters inside Indian territory near the LoC.
July 1: One Policeman, identified as Mushtaq Ahmed, and three militants were killed in the encounter at Mundoora Tral in Pulwama District. June 24: Eight Army personnel were killed and 11 others sustained injuries when two heavily armed HM militants ambushed an Army convoy in Hyderpora area of Srinagar (Srinagar District).Continued attempts by militants to infiltrate the Line of Control (LOC) have kept the security forces busy on the borders. As per the Indian agencies allegedly infiltration bid in Keran sector was part of new strategy by guerrilla handlers to push in large number of guerrillas from multiple points, surprising Indian forces. In an anti-infiltration operation at Shalabhatti in Keran sector of north Kashmir, Indian army claimed that a big group of 30 to 40 militants had infiltrated from across the LOC but the bid was foiled. However, the claim by the security forces about the Keran sector infiltration generated much debate over its authenticity latter on as after 15 days of operation, no bodies were recovered from Shalabhatti area but eight militants were killed in two separate incidents more than 20 km away from the village. During the present year, the biggest success for Indian armed forces is considered when armed forces gunned down five militants in an ambush in Kangan area of central Kashmir's Ganderbal area on August 30. Also the killings of Panchayat members were witnessed during this year which triggered panic and fear among the members after which many tendered their resignations through media outlets.
