ET Report
JAMMU, Jan 14: The Congress has decided to check mate the move of Omar Abdullah to take credit for the formation of news administrative units. Party has decided to rake up the debate over the criteria fixed by the Mushtaq Ganai report, which is forming the basis for announcement likely to be made soon.
Congress sources said party has decided to put public pressure on Omar Abdullah by announcing the criteria for new units and also the logic behind it. Party has also decided that it will generate a debate about making the Ganai report public before Omar could take credit for it.
"If Omar decides to go ahead with announcement, we will generate debate and pressure to announce the criteria of new units. The NC would be forced to make the report public because if it doesn't do it then an impression can be generated that it is forcing its way for political mileage than the concerns of the public, " said Congress Minister.
The calculation of the Cong camp is that if Omar Abdullah makes the report than party would ask for a debate on it rather than accepting it as a gospel good and would also educate the people about it after studying it.
"There is already an impression in the Jammu that Ganai report is biased and it has been prepared on the brief given by Omar Abdullah and his team. And if, Omar refuses to have deliberations and discussion for it, than this perception will become reality and it will take away all the presumed benefits Omar is hoping of," said a Congress source.
Omar has decided to go ahead with the announcement. It has irked Congress. Congress feels that Omar is doing it with two pronged strategy. Congress sources said by taking with the credit , Omar is trying to improve its chances in Kashmir, where Congress has made inroad, and in Jammu region, it would not be able to exploit the dividends and this will leave it static here and mar its chances of becoming the single largest party.
"Cong has political history of outmaneuvering its opponent. It had done in the past and will do so this time also. Party high command has been apprised about and strategy will be executed soon," said Congress source.
