Govt biased in development of lakes in State
2/18/2014 11:46:50 PM
ET Report
JAMMU, Feb 18: Though the State Government has spent huge amount on the development of some lakes in J&K after seeking hundreds of cores of rupees from Central Government for their beautification and development, several others with substantial tourist potential have been ignored altogether.
The source said that while hundreds of crores of rupees were spent for development of Dal and Wullar lakes in Kashmir Valley, no such proposal was mooted by State Government for the development of Mansar and Surinsar lakes in Jammu region who if developed will become an attraction for national as well as international tourists. These two important lakes are crying for development from years together but the successive governments as well as the representatives of the area have failed to take up this issue, sources added.
The issue also figured in State Assembly during debate on annual budget when Harsh Dev Singh of National Panthers Party accused the Government of discriminating with the lakes of Jammu which have a lot of potential for attracting tourists and boosting economy of the region.
Singh who took up the issue accused the State Government of discriminating with Jammu region by not earmarking any amount for the development of Jammu lakes including Mansar and Surinsar lakes in Jammu region. He said if hundreds of crores were got sanctioned as a package for development of Dal, Wullar and Mansbal lakes in Kashmir Valley no such proposal was submitted by State Government for the development of two famous twin lakes of Mansar and Surinsar in Jammu region to boost the economy of the area.
Harsh Dev said these two lakes have lot of tourism potential and need immediate attention for development. However there is a concern in Kashmir Valley that some important lakes which have a lot of tourism potential like Mansbal, Wullar and Dal lake in Kashmir Valley have also been ignored and this is a cause of concern. Among them the Ganderbal district alone has four lakes which included Mansbal, Waskura, Ahansar and Khanpora also were neglected by the Government.
These four lakes have a lot of tourism potential and attraction for tourists but no attention was paid for their development over the years. The Government earlier created lake development authority but the three lakes of Waskura, Ahansar and Khanpura were not brought under its purview said Peoples Conference (PC) leader, Mir Ghulam Rasool Butwani. He demanded that a Lakes Development authority be created for the management and development of these lakes for boosting the economy of the area. He said with creation of Tourism Development Authority these areas would lead to development and also employment generation. Mir also demanded development of Shadipora Sangam a religious place of Hindus in Ganderbal district of Kashmir Valley. Hundreds of pilgrims still visit here and a sacred religious place of Hindus the Government has not paid any attention towards its development.
