| No special financial package for J&K in central interim budget | | | Et Report Jammu, Feb 18: The NC led coalition Government in Jammu and Kashmir feels a bit surprised over the way the Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, has sidelined the state while announcing a Rs.1200 crores special assistance to the North East states, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Chidambaram has proposed a Rs.1200 crore assistance to states in North East, Himachal and Uttarakhand in his interim budget which he presented in the Parliament on Monday. Senior functionaries of the coalition Government in Jammu and Kashmir argue that the economic situation in Jammu and Kashmir was no better than the one that exists in Himachal and Uttarakhand states and hence the state of Jammu and Kashmir too deserved some special package which could help the state in giving a push to some of the development projects. Referring to the dismal electricity scenario in the state Government circles said that notwithstanding the fact that the state Government has decided not to allot any new power project to the NHPC the Union Finance Minister should have proposed some major power project for Jammu and Kashmir. The state Government circles said that Jammu and Kashmir st ate has been facing severe financial stringency with the result modernization of the power transmission system has not been carried out with the result the state has to bear with high rate of transmission and distribution losses. These circles said that since the state has to bank on central financial assistance for meeting 80 per cent expenses on the plan and non-plan activities, including the wage bill of the employees, the Jammu and Kashmir deserves special financial package for enabling the state Government to complete various development projects. |
