Former players pick up holes in state football team's performance at Santosh Trophy
Demand selection of talented players, leaving out average ones

SRINAGAR, Feb 25: The dismal performance of Jammu & Kashmir Football team in the Santosh Trophy has come in for sharp criticism from the experts more so those who have represented the state football team in yesteryears.
A group of retired football players while sharing their views with Early Times said that the selection of team was bad with talented players not being selected in the squad. These football players said the team could have performed much better if the best combination was selected for the matches.
"The biggest irony is that players belonging to only few clubs and departments are being selected with the maximum lot of clubs and departments being left out in the selection process. Santosh Trophy is one of the premier football tournaments in India and as such it was imperative best players got selected to represent the state in this championship," said the retired players.
The retired players said that the performance of mid-fielders and forwards was absolutely dismal with the forwards at least missing 10 goals in the three matches played by the state football team. They said while the deserving players sat on bench the average players donned the state flag during the tournament.
"Defenders like Shahid and Wasim Yousuf were selected to play as forwards and also in mid-field. At the same time average players like Zameer-ul-Hassan, Khalid Qayoom, Azhar, Amanjot Singh, Sandeep and Ramesh were selected to play for Jammu & Kashmir. People at helm in the Jammu & Kashmir Football Association, more so Kashmir wing are incompetent. The Kashmir wing has been turned into a two man army with no scope for competent people to work," said the retired players.
The retired players said that a departmental team like Consumer Affairs & Public Distribution (CAPD) formerly Food & Supplies department has very little presence in the Jammu & Kashmir Football team despite the fact that the team has all along being performed at the state level championships.
"Players of CAPD like Aamir, Yaseen, Tahir and Sameer Ahmad Kumar of Accountant General's Office could have easily been selected for Santosh Trophy. It is important that players like Wasim Feroz, Vikramjeet Singh, Prem, Rohit, Khalid Qayoom, Taufeeq and Azhar should call it a day and make way for younger players," said the retired players.
The retired players also took a decision of the management to engage outside players saying that local players are very talented and serve the cause in a much better manner. They said that local players are waiting in the wings to represent the state and as such need to be given a chance to represent the state in different national championships.
