| India all set to participate in Child World Cup | | |
Sports Reporter JAMMU, Mar 3: Chennai based NGO Karunalaya and Bharti Airtel, today announced the Indian team for the forthcoming Street Child World Cup (SCWC) scheduled at Rio de Janerio, Brazil from March 28 to April eight. A 12-member Indian contingent comprising of nine players and three support volunteers shall be taking part in the soccer extravaganza and prove their mettle against 18 participating countries. India is the current defending champions and were represented by the Youth Football Club, RurkaKalan (Punjab) in the 2010 edition of the Street Child World Cup held in South Africa. Organized a few months ahead of the FIFA World Cup, the SCWC will unite street children from across four continents from 19 countries including Brazil, Burundi, South Africa, Kenya, Liberia, Tanzania, Egypt, Mauritius, El Salvador, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Indonesia, Philippines, Pakistan, USA, Nicaragua, Argentina England and India. The current Indian contingent comprises of children that include orphans and those who have run away from home due to difficult life conditions. Karunalaya with the support of Airtel have empowered these nine kids by giving them a platform and an opportunity to not only play their favorite sport - soccer but also enabled them to travel half way across the globe for a never before experience and retain the championship. These kids have been training hard for the last 6 months in Chennai under special coaches and are gearing up for the World Cup to defend the title. Excited for the forthcoming matches, D Kanadoss, captain, Airtel - Karunalaya Team India, said, "When I was on the streets, I used to do odd jobs at the railway stations and sleep rough. I never knew that I could even dream of flying in an airplane or about playing football in Brazil. I still can't believe that this happening for real. As the team captain I will ensure to motivate the team to play well and win the World Cup".
State hockey team leaves for Nationals Sports Reporter JAMMU, Mar 3: A 19-member state hockey team today left for participation in the 4th Senior National Hockey Championship underway at Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh under the banner of Hockey India. Earlier, the team underwent a coaching camp, followed by the screening conducted by the Sports Officer, Rajan Sharma in the presence of office bearers of the Hockey Jammu and Kashmir. Accompanied by Jagjeet Singh and Iqbal Singh as coach and manager respectively, J&K shall take on Himachal Pradesh in the opening tie on March six. Sports Reporter JAMMU, Mar 3: Superb all-round show from Naresh Kumar today guided Income Tax (IT) XI to a fine 38 runs win over Doordarshan XI in the inaugural tie of the Twenty20 Tournament, organised by the Central Government Employees Welfare Coordination Committee (CGEWCC) at MA Stadium, here. Since only eight teams are taking part in this knock-out competition, the Joint Commissioner, Rakesh Kumar led IT XI qualified for the next round of semifinals. Earlier, IT XI won the toss and decided to bat first they set a target of 116 runs for six wickets. Naresh Kumar remained top scorer with 35 runs including five boundaries while Akhilesh Mishra (14) and Deepak Bhardwaj (11) were other batsmen who scored in double figure. From Doordarshan XI, Suresh Kumar and Girdhari Lal took two wickets each while Varinder Khajuria bagged one. In reply, Doordarshan bowled out for 87 runs in 19.3 overs to lose the match by 38 runs. Rajesh made highest 27 runs, followed by Atul, who added 10 runs to the total. Varinder Khajuria and Dushyant Dutta could not open their accounts. Naresh, who earlier made highest 35 runs for IT XI, clinched four wickets. Skipper, Rakesh Kumar, who was instrumental in two run outs in the 18th over, also bowled well taking away two wickets. Sandeep and Khazan shared one wicket each. Earlier, the tournament was declared open by chief guest, Commissioner of Income Tax, A K Thatai, who interacted with the teams playing in the opening match. He was accompanied by chairman of the organising committee, Joint Commissioner, IT, Rakesh Kumar. Among other special guests were Accountant General, Manish Kumar, Director, Survey of India, Col. Amardeep Singh, Mushtaq Ahmed, Bharat Bhushan, Deputy Director General NSSO, Vishu Maini, Deputy Accountant General, Pushpa Jarangal and Sailesh Raina (RKJ). Tiny Tots School Celebrates First Ever World Wild Life Day
Sports Reporter JAMMU, Mar 3: Tiny Tots Hr Sec School today celebrated the First Ever World Wild Life Day today in the School Premises. The School had organized a Poster Making and slogan writing Competition. Students from Handa College of Education also participated in the Slogan Writing Competition. O P Sharma, Chief Conservator Forests (eco tourism) was the chief guest for the day. This program was conducted to sensitize the students about the conservation of fauna and flora. Sharma chose the winners and the winners included in the Junior Category Zahra Kazmi 1st, Ishita Raina 2nd and Bisma Gul 3rd. In the senior category Urfana Qayoom won the first prize while Ghanshayam Takyal stood Second and the third prize was Shared by Riya Manhas and Saquib Rafiq Qureshi. Prize winner among the College students included Sumitra Dass 1st and Anuj Thakur stood 2nd. After the prize distribution the students were taken for a nature walk where Sharma highlighted the medicinal and fuel value of various plants and trees which are planted in the school campus. Gurpreet Handa the director of the School and Handa College of Education expressed her thanks to Sharma and the Principal of the School Dr Vikram Handa presented a memento to him as a token of appreciation.
North Zone leg of Vijay Hazare Trophy Punjab inflicts humiliating 8-wkt win over J&K
Sports Reporter JAMMU, Mar 3: Led by star cricketers, Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh, Punjab today inflicted a humiliating eight-wicket defeat on Jammu and Kashmir in the ongoing North Zone led of the Vijay Hazare Trophy at Jamia Millia Cricket Ground, Delhi. Batting first after Punjab won the toss and opted to field, J&K set a target of 200 runs losing nine wickets, which, in reply, Punjab chased losing only two wickets that too sparing 13 overs of their innings. Earlier, J&K made a bad start losing first three wickets in the shape of Munish Dogra (03), Adil Reshi (01) and Shubam Khajuria (03) to be reduced to three for seven in 5.5 overs. However, Ian Dev Singh and skipper, Parvez Rasool stabilized the innings bringing the total to 92 for four latter lost his wicket. While Ian Dev made 77-ball 50 runs while Parvez contributed 57-ball 47 runs. Hardeep Singh and Samiullah Beigh were other main contributors to the total with 31 and 24 runs respectively. Science Quiz Competition Organized at Dogra College of Education
Et report JAMMU, Mar 3: A "Science Quiz Competition" was organized in Dogra College of Education on the occasion of National Science Day which is being celebrated every year to mark the discovery of Raman Effect by Indian Physicist Sir C.V. Raman. On this occasion five teams namely Master Minds, Mind Bogglers, Mind Benders, Free Thinkers & Mind Readers consisting of four students each participated in the competition. The theme of the quiz was "Application of Science and Technology in the field of Education" Earlier, Shefali Sharma Vice Principal in her address said that National Science Day is celebrated as one of the main Science festivals in India in which students demonstrates various science projects as well as latest researches. It is being celebrated to widely spread a message about the significance of scientific applications in the daily life of the people. The programme was well organized under the able guidance of Bela Thakur, Lecturer in Teaching of Science and also the Academic Coordinator of the college. She familiarized the students regarding the theme of the year 2014 and added that "Fostering Scientific Temper" and "Energy Conservation" would be the themes of celebrating Science Day in the current year. Prof. B.D. Damral Director (Academics) and Principal Dogra College of Education highly appreciated the efforts put in by the students and staff members for organising such healthy and educative programmes. At the end, team Mind Bogglers comprising of Ritu, Gulshan, Babita and Liquat Ali were declared winners.
Governor inspects upcoming SMVD Multi-purpose Sports Stadium at Katra Et Report KATRA, Mar 3: N.N. Vohra, Governor, Chairman of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, inspected Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Multi-purpose Sports Stadium at Katra yesterday and directed that time bound steps be taken for the completion of all aspects of the Stadium and the sports competition areas. He advised the Chief Executive Officer of the Shrine Board, Dr. M.K. Bhandari, to urgently finalise a pert- chart for establishing timelines of completion of every element of this Project. This modern outdoor Stadium is being constructed by the Shrine Board at an estimated cost of around Rs.8.00 crore. The Governor reviewed the ground excavation work and other ongoing works at the Stadium and issued instructions for fast growing species of shady trees and ornamental plants being planted along the entire boundary of the Stadium. He directed the Engineering Wing to expeditiously complete the excavation work, to be followed by laying of quality turf on the ground. Mohandaas, officer in charge of the forestry wing, informed that after ascertaining from other stadiums, in various parts of the country, a decision had been taken about the species of grass to be planted for turfing the Stadium grounds. The plantation shall be carried out during the monsoon season. He was also informed that an automatic pop-up water sprinkler system is being installed simultaneously for proper maintenance of the turf. Dr. Bhandari, CEO, informed that the pavillion of the Stadium would have a seating capacity for around 3,000 spectators. He said that basketball and volleyball courts are nearing completion while infrastructure for other games is also being created. The Governor observed that with the completion of this Project, the Stadium Complex would provide a very good opportunity for the youth to participate in various sports activities. He directed the CEO to take advance necessary action to ensure that this facility is put to optimum use for organizing district and State level sports competitions and, in due course, national level sports events. The Governor asked the Director Sports, SMVDSB, to prepare a calendar of activities for involving various schools, colleges and Universities in various competitive sports events in the coming months, after its commissioning. He also directed the Director Sports to meet the Vice Chancellor of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University and see that the sports infrastructure in the University is put to optimum use. The Katra Stadium will have provision for various sports like football, cricket, hockey, volleyball, basketball, handball, wrestling, kabaddi, kho-kho, table tennis etc. and shall have a gymnasium, changing rooms, pantry facilities, toilets and parking space.
