| Losers demand ban on exit polls, pre-poll surveys | | NC-Cong coalition and 2014 elections | | Rustam
JAMMU, Mar 3: On February 26, the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) condemned media in general and pollsters in particular and demanded a blanket ban on pre-poll surveys. The Congress leadership even met with the Election authorities in New Delhi to demand ban on pre-poll surveys. The Congress, inter-alia, dismissed as unscientific pre-poll surveys, sought to explain what it called manipulative nature of pre-poll surveys conducted by various agencies and said: The surveys were manipulated using black money which became clear in a sting operation conducted on opinion poll agencies by a private television news channel yesterday. We don't support such surveys. The Congress has always opposed opinion polls. That's why we never send our representatives to news channels discussing surveys...There is a nexus between BJP and one of the poll agencies (read C-Voters) figuring in the sting operation". The AAP activists, including Arvind Kejriwal, Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan, also said almost the same the same day. They described pre-poll surveys as a potential threat to Indian democracy and said that these manipulated opinion polls are a big scam and a conspiracy is being hatched against the AAP using manufactured and manipulated opinion polls. Majority of print and electronic media funded by big business houses is playing with the future of our country. There should be a criminal investigation in the manner in which democracy is run, they also added. The demand of the Congress and the AAP seeking a blanket ban on pre-poll surveys was criticized by bulk of electronic media and a number of political parties. In fact, the demand put forth by these outfits became a big issue of debate that day. Even today, the discussion is going on what the Congress and the AAP said about pre-poll surveys.
However, what the NC-Congress coalition government had done in the Assembly a day before went unnoticed. On February 25, the State Legislative Assembly had incorporated a few changes in the Jammu & Kashmir Representation of Peoples Act, 1957, and banned publication of exit polls. This should have attracted the attention of media and pollsters, but it didn't happen. Why did the NC-Congress coalition ban publication of exit polls? And who demand ban publication of pre-poll surveys and publication of exit polls? Only the losers demand ban on pre-polls surveys and publication of exit polls. One can understand the problem of the ruling coalition in the state as well as the Congress-led UPA at the centre. Both the coalitions have become unpopular because of their acts of omission and commission. This is the general consensus in the state. That the NC-Congress coalition banned publication of exit polls was nothing but an indication that both the parties in the state, like the Congress and its coalition partners at the centre, are convinced that political wind is blowing against them. |
