BARAMULLA, Mar 28: Residents of different villages of Handwara Tehsil in frontier District of Kupwara staged protests on Friday against the government failure to provide relief to those people who have suffered heavy losses due to landslides.
The protestors alleged that not a single government official visited their areas where rains and landslides have caused extensive damage to the structures and orchards.
One of the protestors from Golpora, Imamudin Dogri, said due to incessant rains his house was damaged completely while at least 55 cattle were washed away. "It not only surprised me but everyone after coming to know that government threw few chunks of coins in my lap for losing my cattle," he said.
"We received no response from the civil administration to flush out the flood water from our homes," he said adding that people are suffering heavily on account of bad weather.
Another protestor from Wadarbala, Saifudin Tikri, said that due to continuous water logging his residential house collapsed and he along with his family members are spending days and nights in a temporary shed.
In Darshpora, the orchards of scores of farmers including Muhammad Amin Tantray, Nisar Ahmed and Fayaz Ahmed have been completely damaged.
"All the apple trees are lying on the ground while the irony is that the concerned MLA or any government official never bothered to visit the area to take stock of the situation," Fayaz Ahmed said.
Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Itrit Hussain said government is unable to make an estimate of losses till weather improves. He said that the district administration provided Rs 5,000 to the people who lost their cattle.
Meanwhile A three-story house collapsed due to incessant rains in Dangerpora village in Baramulla district last night forcing other villagers to vacate the area. Locals said due to incessant rains Ghulam Muhammad Naiko's three-storey house collapsed yesterday at 11 pm.
After the incident, panic and fear gripped the area as landslides occurred at various places which forced 15 families to evacuate and
move towards safer place.
Reports said, "A house collapsed due to landslide. The family members were evacuated and other fifteen families have been shifted to safer places keeping in view the danger posed by the landslides".
Residents said incessant rain has caused damaged to nearly five acres of agricultural land in the area. They appealed government to rehabilitate them and alleged that the authorities, so far, had not paid any attention towards them.
