10 villages of Tehsil Nowshera deprived of adequate irrigation
6 years on, Gravity Feeder Channel, Modernization of Rajal Canal incomplete

Jammu, Mar 28: The slackness on the part of Irrigation Department can be gauged from the fact that two major projects "Construction of Gravity Feeder Channel" and "Modernization of Rajal Canal", Nowshera," for augmentation of Lift Irrigation Scheme (LIS) are still incomplete even after the lapse of 6 years, depriving 10 villages of tehsil of adequate irrigation facility.
Sources told Early Times that the government, while taking cognizance of the situation arising out of the inadequate irrigation facility, took up the projects of "Construction of Gravity Feeder Channel for augmentation of LIS, Rajal Canal," and Modernization of Rajal Canal (Construction of Rajal Canal Phase- II) under Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP) at a cost of Rs 17.50 crore and Rs 8.31 crore, respectively, with a matching state share.
Sources further said that in order to overcome the problems for providing of adequate irrigation to the farmers, the government converted the LIS into a Gravity scheme by way of construction of Gravity Channel of 6020M with a design discharge of 60 cusecs having its head works at village Thalka. The source of the scheme is river Nowshera Tawi which is normally carrying a minimum discharge of 2.34 cumecs against the requirement of only 1.68 cumecs (60 cusecs).
They further informed that schemes were targeted for completion by April, 2012 but the main reason for delay in execution of the projects was attributed by the agency to the slow funding and late releases made over the years. Against the target length of 6020M of "Gravity Feeder" channel, 5065M has been completed ending December, 2013.
They said that the project Rajal Canal Phase II was envisaged for treating of those spots of the main canal where there were profuse
leakages/damage to prevent loss of water. The same holds good for its 12 distributions, wherein also the existing section of the distribution had to be retained. Only weak/damaged and vulnerable spots are being treated except for some obligatory bottlenecks so as to make the portion in consonance with the available section, they added.
