Property worth crores lying idle as SMC fails to shift dislocated shopkeepers | Shopping complex develops cracks in heart of summer capital | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Apr 1: Property worth crores of rupees is lying idle in the heart of the summer capital of the state with the State Government yet to shift the people for whom the shops were constructed in the Hazuri Bagh area despite the lapse of 11 years. According to the details available with Early Times around 200 shops were constructed by Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) for the shopkeepers who got dislocated due to the beautification drive going on at that time in the different areas of Srinagar more so in close vicinity of Lal Chowk area. The shopkeepers who got dislocated were first expected to be accommodated at the Cheap Market near the exhibition crossing but as the shopkeepers of that particular area demanded rehabilitation the State Government had to shelve the plan. Following this it was decided to construct shops in the Hazuri Bagh area where the shopkeepers could be rehabilitated. Srinagar Municipal Corporation got Rs. 50,000 as registration charges from each of the shopkeepers who were to be rehabilitated in the shopping complex at the Hazuri Bagh. Even if 11 years have passed since then the shopkeepers have not been given the allotment of the shops meant for them. As on date the shopping complex has developed cracks and as such the hard earned money of around 200 beneficiaries has gone down the drain. The beneficiaries are quite upset with the Government more so the Srinagar Municipal Corporation and say that they have been taken for granted by SMC. The failure of the State Government to allot the shops has led to the traffic hazard in one of the congested areas of the Srinagar city. The shopkeepers have occupied the space in the Hazuri Bagh area and are selling their produce on the main road. This leads to obstacles in the movement of both pedestrian and traffic movements in this area. "We fail to understand the logic behind the failure to shift us to the Hazuri Bagh complex. If it would have been done then the all important problem of traffic mess would have been avoided. There seems to be nexus in this respect and at the end of the day we are the ultimate sufferers with nobody listening to us," said a group of beneficiaries. The beneficiaries said that SMC should take a cue from the action taken by former Commissioner, Srinagar, Sheikh Mushtaq Ahmad. They said that former Commissioner ordered for the shifting of the people selling their merchandise on road near the Exhibition Crossing to the Cheap Market constructed for their purpose. This they said solved the problem of traffic jams and mess thus giving huge relief to the people in general. "We made many representations to the people at helm in SMC but nobody listened to us. Former Chief Enforcement Officer, Hakeem Aijaz spoiled our party and always acted as a big stumbling block in our shifting. Nobody had the guts to take him to task and as such we continue to suffer," said the beneficiaries. |
