SRINAGAR, May 19: Government has failed to pay attention to Pahalgam, the world famous health resort as nothing has been done for upliftment of this place of great importance. The government seems to have forgotten about its responsibilities giving tough times to the tourists as well as to the inhabitants of the area.
Pahalgam, which is a 98 kilometers drive from Srinagar, is craving for attention. The roads leading to this discovered place is in shambles, electricity not up to the mark and drinking water contaminated. Whosoever visits this place finds himself in uncomfortable conditions.
"Pahalgam is the place of attraction for the tourists world over. Lakhs of tourists visit this place every year which in turn helps in the improvement of the economic conditions of the people. But the lack of required infrastructure and standard services disheartens the tourists visiting this place," said Parvaiz Ahmad, a tourism player.
Pervaiz added that the carelessness of the government has done a great damage to this picturesque place. This place used to be visited by the personalities of international repute, both in pre partition and post partition times, spending days together at this mesmerizing place.
These days Pahalgam has nothing to offer as it presents the look of a thing which has been abandoned by someone, as nobody from the higher ups bothers to have the firsthand account of the facilities available there.
"This place has lost its glory on account of the official apathy. The journey of two hours is completed in five hours. The hoteliers are directed to contact the political leaders to settle the simplest of the issues. The administration gives us tough time on one pretext or the other," said a hotelier at Pahalgam wishing not to be named.
The condition of the inhabitants of the Pahalgam area is also pitiable, whose living standard has not improved over the years. The inhabitants of this area are left with no choice but to drink the contaminated water which poses serious threat to their health.
Tourism players opinion that the government is not clear on the tourism policy related to Pahalgam forcing the tourists to take rout to the neighboring states. According to these tourism players the government has no plans to improve the tourism sector as is evident from their policies.
