Early Times Report

Jammu, May 19: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's introspective move of seeking suggestions from people as to what went wrong for NC's debacle through his personal mail account continues to draw flak for all right reasons. For Omar it may be really a start-point for making amends in the strategy and overall conduct of the party towards masses, yet it has not gone well nor even received positively by those who can access him through e- mail.Even though it was taken positively, the irony amid criticism remains that there is a little over 2 percent internet users across the state who can actually give feedback or suggestions to Chief Minister.
On proverbial lines of better late than never, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah may be taking solace from initiating into some prompt set towards damage control exercise contrary to his alliance partner Congress which is still in 'rude' and 'rigid' mode, but is he oblivious of certain facts which simply make it ridiculous and superficial talk. First he must know as to how many people have access to internet users in the state who can flow in their suggestions where NC faltered all these years. In all, there are approximately 58,000 people who use internet regularly across the state.
As for NC's debacle for three seats in Kashmir Valley, the number certainly is far less. Moreover, the number mostly concentrated in urban areas who have access to internet and who can get back to Omar in giving their feedback, whereas the fact remains that this time even the die hard supporters of NC in their rural bastions have rejected the candidates to become MPs.
However, there are certain hard questions which people have right to ask before believing that realization has dawned upon the Chief Minister to change and correct party's political face ahead of Assembly elections. First, what happened to the CM's Grievance Cell which was launched with much publicity before it faded out of public memory in less than a year's time during his tenure. The Grievance Cell started off well with an enthusiastic response from the people and was flooded with genuine complaints of corruption, misgovernance on various fronts and other such aberrations which could have been checked had the CM given serious thought and attention. It proved to be only a publicity stunt even though some complaints in the initial fervour were addressed by the then advisor and incharge Mubarak Gul.
People have also right to know that if CM is really keen to listen where things are going astray in his rule as head of the state and leader of the ruling party, why a similar move of CM's Public Durbar fizzled out completely soon after it was started with much fanfare in Srinagar two years back. Had Omar remain firm and stable on at least these two fronts, he would have been able to know where things are going wrong, rather than depending solely on a couple of people surrounding him most of the time for getting a feedback from the ground.
