Soldier killed, militants 'flee'

SRINAGAR, May 19: One soldier got killed while as three others were injured during an encounter in a village in the Central Kashmir's Budgam district in the afternoon today. Reinforcements have been rushed to flush out the militants hiding in the village.
However, reports said that the militants have fled from the village and search operations have been extended to the nearby villages. The siege is likely to be lifted in the morning tomorrow only when the final picture emerges.
Reports reaching here said that security forces received information that three militants are hiding in the Kaisermulla village of Chadoora area in the Budgam district. The village was cordoned off and the security forces personnnel started combing operations in the village.
Reports and eye-witnesses told Early Times that the security forces personnel received a bout of bullets as they were cordoning off the village. In the initial gun burst four security forces personnel were injured and they were shifted to the 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar for treatment.
At the hospital one of the security forces personnel identified as Sepoy Mir Mushtaq of 53 RR and a resident of Chadoora succumbed to his injuries. The security forces personnel who sustained injuries in the firing incident are riflemen Joginder, Sandeep Kumar and Teerath Kumar.
As the gun fight started in the village reinforcements were sent to the village to help the security forces personnel in order to trap the militants hiding there. The encounter was going on and the security forces personnel are trying their best to kill the militants hiding in a house in the village.
"It is believed that two or three militants owing allegiance to Lashkar-e-Toiba including a top commander of the militant outfit are hiding in the house that belongs to a police constable. The operation against the militants may be called off during the night but nothing is certain as of now," said sources.
Sources said that there was heavy exchange of fire between the two sides immediately after the security forces personnel got injured in the initial gun burst from the militants. The security forces are keeping a tight vigil in the area in their bid to ensure that none of the hiding militants flee during the night.
"It has been observed in the past that the militants more so their top commanders manage to flee while taking cover of darkness during the night. It is possible that the operation may be suspended during the night but at the same time security forces personnel would carry on with their cordon. The operation may be resumed in the morning in order to kill the militants," said sources.
However, late night reports said that the militants managed to flee from the village. But the police and security forces are continuing with the cordon and search operations. It is expected that siege would be lifted in the morning tomorrow.
