Threats to democratically elected Panchayat members intolerable: Naqvi | 'BJP's priority is permanent peace in J&K' | | Syed Junaid Hashmi
JAMMU, May 19: New Delhi will force Jammu and Kashmir government to take strict action against those so-called separatist leaders who have been threatening democratically elected Panchayat members and asking them to resign. On being asked, National vice-president of BJP Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that BJP wants to create an atmosphere of trust and faith in Jammu and Kashmir. "Democratically elected people should not be harassed or forced to quit. They should be allowed to function independently. Those who are threatening them and asking them to reign should introspect whether these acts are going to help cause of Jammu and Kashmir or damage it permanently. BJP would do everything in its prowess to ensure an atmosphere of safety and security returns to J&K," said Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi while talking exclusively to Early Times. He further said that BJP government led by Narendra Modi would be act tough against extremist elements and terrorists. "We are not going to tolerate dictates of extremists and terror outfits. We want permanent peace and harmony in J&K," added Naqvi. With Naqvi making it clear that attacks on Sarpanches and Panches won't be tolerated, Shafiq Mir of All J&K Panchayat Conference (AJKPC) said that a decision would be taken in meeting being held tomorrow in Srinagar. The statements have come at a time when Sarpanches and Panches have so far resisted the threat and despite facing bullets not resigned. In the latest instance, chairman of so-called moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Omar Farooq held a meeting with representatives of Panchayats, asking them to resign. He asked Panchayat members to disassociate themselves from politics with the plea that they were being used by Government of India to project a misleading picture of Kashmir to the international community. He further told them that Panchayat is an extension of Indian authority while adding that onus was on them to make it clear that they were not collaborators but victims. He further asked them to send a message that they had been misled in the name of Panchayats. Prior to this, Hurriyat (G) chief Syed Ali Shah Geelani had alleged that their existence was damaging freedom struggle and that they were helping army and police. He had further threatened to use various sources to apprise people about negative role of Panches and Sarpanches. They pleaded with him to give them some days to think. Thereafter, they have held several rounds of meetings with Panches and Sarpanches from across the state. They are likely to announce their decision within a day or two about whether or not they would resign. |
