Early Times Report

JAMMU, May 19: Notwithstanding the fact that the five year old political arrangement in the shape of Congress-NC alliance in Jammu and Kashmir may not be altered the National Conference leadership plans to contest the ensuing Assembly election without any pre-poll alliance with the Congress.
Party sources said that among various factors pre-poll alliance with the Congress had led to the defeat of the NC from all the three constituencies in the Kashmir valley. It is ironical that when the Lok Sabha poll schedule was announced the National Conference leadership was more keen to forge a pre-poll alliance with the Congress than the senior leaders of the state unit of the Congress.
The NC leadership had thought that by forging a pre-poll alliance with the Congress it would shut the doors for any pre-poll or post-poll alliance between the PDP and the Congress.
Since the NC leadership has been conveyed by party workers that pre-poll alliance with the Congress had added to peoples' anger against the NC in the Kashmir valley Omar and Farooq Abdullah are said to have been toying with the idea of contesting the next Assembly poll on its own and without any pre-poll alliance with the Congress.
Party sources said that in order to retain its understanding and alliance with the Congress the NC leadership may agree on some electoral adjustment with the Congress so that there was no possibility of a split in pro-NC-Congress vote bank. Reports said that senior leaders of the state unit of the Congress are also eager to contest the ensuing Assembly poll without any pre-poll alliance with the NC. A senior Congress leader said that "we had already cautioned the party high command against forging any pre-poll alliance with the NC but the Congress high command had accepted the NC plea for pre-poll alliance and rejected our plea." He said that had the party high command agreed to "our view point" the Congress would have bagged at least two seats, including one from the valley.
