| Govt agencies shut eyes to brazen violation of environment norms | | Budgam irked by mushrooming of brick kilns | | Shakeel A Khan
SRINAGAR, June 23: Uncontrolled mushrooming of brick kilns across Budgam district has endangered the ecology of region besides rapidly eating into the agricultural land, while the district administration is seemingly hand in glove with the violators of norms. This mushrooming of the brick kilns has posed problems to the people of the area in many ways and the government agencies are clearly conniving with people who have created havoc by destroying the landscape and ecology of the area. "The administration has acted insensitively by allowing the establishments of the brick kilns. In these areas, the non locals have outnumbered the local population which is posing serious social problems," said Mohammad Ashraf from Budgam. According to Ashraf, the areas adjacent to these brick kilns are fast losing their identity as these areas remain under the control of the outsiders for the most part of the year as the brick kiln owners employ them as the labors. Some elders from the area expressed their serious reservations about the brick kilns which according to them, have harmed the interests of the people living in their area as according to these elders, the agricultural land has suffered immensely ruining the future of the people who have lived here for ages. There are many other problems that these brick kilns have posed to the people of the area. The establishments of the brick kilns have invited a huge rush of dumpers in the area resulting in frequent traffic jams. The unprecedented rush of the dumpers has caused severe noise and air pollution which gives tough times to the people. The school going children and the elderly people suffer the most on account of this as they easily fall prey to the dust which blows around all the time. The movement of these dumpers has unleashed reign of terror threatening the lives of the people particularly of the school going children. "We remain concerned till our children return from school as the movement of dumpers continues from morning to evening and even during the nights," said a concerned parent, while talking to Early Times. |
