| Youth killed, 4 others injured in clashes | | Violence hits Sopore post encounter | |

SOPORE, June 23: A youth has been shot dead while four other were injured during a protest which erupted after a 20-hour long gunfight ended in Sopore town in North Kashmir's Baramulla district on Monday. According to sources, soon after encounter between forces and militants concluded at Krankshivan colony, Sopore, people assembled near the gun-battle spot, and staged pro-freedom and anti-India protests. Dr Syed Masood, Block Medical Officer Sopore told Early Times that Arshid Ahmad Shah, 22, a youth from Peer Bagh in Seer village of town has died while four others are wounded. "He had received a bullet in his chest and was brought dead to the sub district hospital," Arshid's father works as a driver with the Jammu and Kashmir government's Power Development Department. The identity of the three injured youth is yet to be ascertained. Police are yet to confirm the death. Sources identified one of the injured as Obaid Ahmad from Nawa Hamam. He has received a bullet in his abdomen and has been shifted to Sher Kashmir Institute of Medical Science (SKIMS) Soura Srinagar. An Eye witnesses from SoporeGhulam Mohammad said that, "Protests had erupted soon after a 20-hour long gunfight left a top Lashkar-e-Toiba militant was killed and a local militant managed to flee from the spot. The killing of youth sparked more protests in the area with more and more people joining protesters, The area was witnessing massive protests when the report was filed. Police sources claimed that the youth had tried to attack a police vehicle after the gunfight ended and they had to fire in retaliation. Meanwhile Two militants were killed after 20-hour long gunfight at Sopore in north Kashmir's Baramulla district on Monday. Official sources said that the two holed up militants including a Top Lashkar commander Mehmood Bai and a local militant Javid Ahmad Matoo got killed in Krankshiven colony in Sopore. "Today morning police had brought mother and father of the local militant Javid Ahmad Matoo who also was holed up asking him for surrender before the forces", sources said. The mother of the holed up militant was crying outside the house "JavidalejiyaMouj Karta Surrender" (Javid please do surrender before the police) but her militant son declined his mother's offer. A joint team of the Indian Army posted in the area along with the Jammu and Kashmir Police, acted on a specific information, had cordoning off the Krankshavan Colony in the Sopore town around 5.00 pm on Sunday. Army's 52 RR, 22 RR, CRPF and SOG were part of the operation against the holed up militants in Krankshiven colony. |
