| Jehlum revenged, feel locals | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Sept 25: Chowdhury Pan House added to the hustle and bustle of posh and busy Hari Singh High Street especially in early 80s. The person who ran this shop for several decades got killed in a firing incident during hey days of militancy. But his great father, the senior Chowdhury, elderly people believe, was an arch environmentalist. He would shout at people who polluted the river by throwing garbage into it. At times he would scold them as well. "During Dogra regime, a person would be imprisoned for several days for spitting into Jehlum. Maharaja Hari Singh care so much for the river." The senior Chowdhury was once heard saying in his locality. Chowdhury would have beaten his chest at seeing all drains of the city opening into the river (if he were alive today). Not only this, successive State Governments showed indifference towards the river. "There has been no dredging in the river for the past four decades," a senior citizen of Shaheed Gali said. According to him, Kashmiris have been polluting in the river for several decades (emptying their drains into the river). The river, he said, avenged the sacrilege on September 7. "The river responded violently taking revenge ," he said. |
