| Maharajpora bridge completion remains a distant dream | | 6 labourers, 204 meter long bridge with 4 pillars, 9 piles | | Syed Tahir Bukhari
BARAMULLA, Sept 27: The construction on the Mahrajpora Bridge in Sopore is still incomplete. Locals allege that men and machinery are of no use. According to locals of ME.T and Tulibal area Mahrajpora Bridge is being constructed between Sheel colony Tarzoo and Bandipora, it is 205 meter long on 4 pillars with 9 piles. Foundation stone was laid down by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at the cost of Rs 16 crore, in which Rs 9 crore have been sanctioned and only among the released money only tin sheds were seen on the ground. Locals of Mahrajpora told Early Times that there is a person Showkat Ahmad Najar R/O Chankhan Sopore who is working as casual labor and performs the duty of supervisor from 1999, whereas Nisar Ahmad Pandith Resident of Mohalla Rahim Sahib Sopore, who is working as Junior Engineer (JE) JKPCC under whose supervision work should have been going on, but he is nowhere since the job was assigned to him. They complained that iron cutter gauges of rupees 16 lakh is placed there, 3 cement trucks were unloaded and each truck carried 540 bags of JK Cement and price of one bag is rupees 420 in the market in which one truck has been damaged by water lodging and will be of no use which means, rupees 226800 is a complete lost to the state exchequer. The locals said that due to non-completion of the bridge, the people were suffering immensely, after completion the bridge would significantly shorten the distance between several areas of Baramulla and Kupwara. "However, the construction on the bridge is going on at snail's pace and the executing agency has missed many deadlines for the completion of the project. A senior official from district administration told Early Times that "It is true that the construction on the bridge is going on from the last 20 years. We are in touch with the executing agency." Acknowledging the slow pace of work on the project, he further said and added, "If the work on the bridge will continue at the snail's pace, it will take many years to complete it and there was no dearth of funds for the construction of the bridge, official said. "The irony is that only six to seven labourers are working for the construction of the bridge. It completely shows that men and machinery are of no use as we have seen that floods has washed out many bridges because, Men, Manpower, Money ,Module and Management was not properly utilized well on the construction works, locals alleged. |
