| FINAL NAIL IN 'COFFIN': Omar continues to disappoint people with bad governance | | Inapt handling of post flood situation | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Sept 27: Failure of the state Government in tackling the recent catastrophe in the form of devastating flood added yet another dimension to the bad governance or mis-governance that the state has witnessed ever since Omar Abdullah took over as the Chief Minister of the state. Not to talk of the opposition the Chief Minister himself admitted and acknowledged that the Government was missing on the ground even though for a brief period of time after the flood hit the Kashmir valley. Omar accepted that there was no Government in the state for 36 hours and there was chaos and confusion all around. In other words one can safely say that the state Government got 'drowned' in the gushing waters of Jhelum and Chenab in Kashmir and Jammu divisions respectively. Their inapt attitude is evident even today since many areas of the summer capital continue to be submerged in the flood water. People are craving for basic facilities and the Government higher ups at the same time are busy in making tall claims. Three weeks after the ravaging flood one continues to hear about the brave stories of the youth who risked their lives while saving people who got trapped in flood in different areas of the Kashmir. On the other hand the angered people give their vent to their feelings while narrating sordid saga of affairs of the state Government. Omar tried his every bit to highlight his performance when the level of the water was mere two feet. As soon as the water started showing its colours the Chief Minister along with his coterie was to be found nowhere. They had no plan of action and what was worse the state Government was not in possession of boats and sand bags that could have saved the lives of people. For days together, volunteers, youth and Army jawans could be seen rescuing people from areas that bore the brunt of the flood. At the same time groups of people organized community kitchens for the flood affected people. There were many who opened their doors for the people who were badly hit by the nature's fury. The Government was not seen anywhere and everybody seemed to be the Chief Minister since the situation was very grave. Majority of the Ministers and the mainstream leaders left this place and stayed in Jammu and other places so that their lavish lifestyle is not disturbed. This led to more anger among the people and the results would be known in the coming Assembly elections. A group of Ministers led by Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather chose to go to New Delhi and 'beg' in New Delhi in the name of rescue and relief. These people came in for sharp criticism from those living in the national capital. The Ministers were castigated for coming to New Delhi with the 'begging bowl' instead of helping people who were in trouble at that point of time. The failure of the state dispensation has also been pointed out by senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad. Azad has maintained that sincere Ministers and bureaucrats should have been by side of the people of Kashmir at the time of flood. He at the same time maintained his good relations with Omar saying that Chief Minister did what he could for the flood affected people. People and political analysts believe that the under performance of the coalition dispensation in tackling the flood would spell doom for both National Conference and Congress in the Assembly elections. They also say that this may turn out to be final nail in the 'coffin' of National Conference-Congress coalition Government in the state with its results having far reaching consequences. |
