Assembly elections likely to be deferred, J&K heading for Governor's rule
9/27/2014 11:28:09 PM

Early Times Report
NEW DELHI, Sept 27: Highly placed sourced in the Union Home Ministry told Early Times today that the Centre is seriously mulling postponement of state Assembly elections in J&K which would be preceded by a short spell of Governor's rule.
"Reports gathered by various central Government Ministries and those based on missives received from the state Government regarding the huge damage caused by the recent floods indicate holding of free, fair and participative elections might not be possible before May 2015," MHA top sources told Early Times here.
The same sources said while the final call will have to be taken by the Election Commission of India, the revision of electoral rolls etc must be completed before the EC can announce elections in J&K.
"Since all the machinery of the state Government is going to be busy with the colossal relief and restoration works, attending to election related issues would not be possible for an administration that is already over-stretched to its limits," said authoritative sources in New Delhi.
Another important decision regarding J&K that appears to have been already taken while the choice of the new incumbent still remains open is the change of the state Governor.
The present state Governor N.N. Vohra is presently completing his second term as the state Governor. Vohra was granted a fresh term as J&K Governor by the UPA Government.
The name of Atta Hasnain, former Commander of Srinagar based 15th Corps is among the top probables for the Governor's post in the State.
