| `Orphaned' solar plants in JK hospitals explode Farooq's claims | | | GS Asgotra JAMMU, Sept 27: The tall claims of former Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Dr. Farooq Abdullah of bringing revolution in energy sector by tapping the solar energy has seemingly dashed to ground as there is no caretaker of defunct solar plants installed in various hospitals. One such example is the solar plant installed at sub-district hospital RS Pura, where a solar plant was installed in year 2010 to meet the requirement of power during curtailment hours, and it was also inaugurated by Farooq Abdullah but the same solar plant become defunct within six months of its inauguration. Sources in the department informed Early Times that after only six months of the installation the solar plant had stopped working and despite repeated communications to concerned department none of the official had bothered to repair the same. "The total cost of plant may run in several Lakhs but it has failed to serve any purpose as the gadget went out of order after a few months", an official said, adding that the only job of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy was to install solar plants and make payments to contractors. As none of the official of the company which had installed the solar plant had visited the hospital, forcing the hospital authorities to go for other alternatives. Pertinently, when the solar plant was inaugurated by Farooq Abdullah, he had claimed that it was best and cheapest source of energy, which protected the environment. A doctor wishing anonymity said that it is not a single example, majority of solar project in different department were defunct. He accused the former Government of receiving kickbacks for the defective gadgets. The Block Medical Officer RS Pura Dr. Desh Raj Bhagat said that they had repeatedly apprised the higher authorities for repairs of solar plant. "An official of company had also visited the hospital but we didn't get any reply, after which we had purchased the generator set, which is very essential for hospital", he said. |
