Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 27: Market association of the famed Market of Srinagar, Gonikhan, badly destroyed by flood assessed around Rs 10000 crore loss amid worries of more than 75% business unit holders of the market for not securing their business with insurance.
The details received from Gonikhan Market association reveal that around 500 business units are associated with their market association and all the 500 business units were completely damaged by flood, besides around 5 business units comprising 1 to 4 stories worth around Rs 2 crores of goods in each unit were also completely destroyed.
While talking to Early Times, the association said that only 15 % unit holders have secured their business with insurance policies and a negligible percentage of shopkeepers deal with Banks via C-C account mode. "I had a Business unit of readymade garments 'Selection fabrics' which now looks like a dumping site as bad smell comes out of the readymade garments which my employees are throwing out this time. I have no courage to assess the losses but my brother yesterday said it may be around Rs 1 core, besides damage to show rooms etc," said Chasfeed Ahmad Bazaz with tears rolling down on his face. Owner of 'New Modern Collection' Aftab Ahmad who has suffered loss worth Rs 15 lakhs to his two storey business unit said that 'Ihave never applied for any kind of insurance policy of any insurance company in connection with my business and neither I have any C-C mode account in Bank.' General secretary of Gonikhan Market association, Jalal-ud-din who himself suffered loss of crores of rupees in his units said that a negligible percentage of business unit holders have secured their business units with insurance and C-C accounts and added that since all the business holders have suffered loss , so government must adopt a unanimous financial assistance methodology for the business fraternity which could benefit majority of unit holders instead selected ones.
Shopkeepers of Gonikhan Market Association on a consensus note said that even insurance companies do not pay 100 % amount of loss to their clients which in turn means that shopkeepers who have insurance claims with all such insurance companies cannot recover 100% loss, therefore central government must intervene in the matter directly and announce a unanimous assistance package for one and all instead of helping selected ones. On the occasion shopkeepers shouted slogans against Srinagar Municipal Corporation for not cleaning debris from Gonikhan market which according to them has made their life hazardous and can give birth to viral diseases if not removed from the area on immediate bases.
