As enforcement agencies sleep, 'greedy' traders busy in looting flood affected people | Excess, distress sale going on under nose of authorities | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Oct 4: At a time when the after affects of flood are casting its spell on the overall situation in summer capital of state and other parts of Kashmir the enforcement agencies have failed to take action against the unscrupulous elements who are taking undue advantage of the present situation. Over the past 10 days some of the traders are selling their rotten stock of merchandise to the hapless people. The flood affected people are purchasing the goods since they have no other option available following devastation after the nature's fury. The concerned agencies are in a slumber with no action being taken against the 'violators'. The Hari Singh High Street (HSHS) area in the summer capital is abuzz with activities these days as people are thronging the furnishing shops in connection with the purchase of furnishing items. The flood affected people are desperate enough to purchase these items since their household belongings have been washed away by the flood water. "I went to a furnishing shop to purchase curtains since the curtains of my house have got damaged. I asked for the rates and then confirmed the same from my sister. She told me the rates are higher more so since the stock is affected by flood. After this I dropped the idea of purchasing the curtains and decided to wait for some more days," said Zahoor Ahmad, a resident of Bemina. Such is the rush of people that half of the road near the Budshah flats on the side of flyover is covered by prospective buyers. This leads to traffic jam at this point and one cannot rule out the casualties given the mess around. No traffic police cop is present at this point and as such it is free for all situation. "Enforcement agencies like Jammu & Kashmir Police and Srinagar Municipal Corporation have an important role in this regard. If action is taken against one of the erring furnishing shop owners then the others may not take the masses for a ride. Since this has not happened so far the hapless people are at the receiving end," said Mohammad Ramzan, a resident of Ikhrajpora. It is not only the furnishing shop owners who are taking people for a ride some of the other shopkeepers are also busy in cheating the people. Somehow, the affected people are attracted towards the damaged merchandise and they make a beeline to purchase the goods. "A leading shop selling shoes on Residency Road has been offering the damaged shoes under a distress sale scheme over the past few days. The shop owner has erected a cot on the pavement and has been displaying the shoes and chappals under a sale. This is bound to create problems for the people, but still then there are many who are ready to buy," said Imran Ahmad, a resident of Abi Guzar. It would be in place to mention here that the authorities have already asked the people not to make use of the flood affected goods since there are many health hazards attached with it. |
