Though the main opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP), Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) are in favour of holding assembly elections on scheduled time, main coalition partner Congress is still indecisive while National Conference is favouring postponement of elections, taking shield of non conducive ground situation in state. As per the reports, the Deputy Chief Election Commissioner (ECI), Vinod Zutshi is visiting Jammu and Kashmir for two days visit starting from October 7, to review the possibility of holding elections. He would also meet representatives of all recognized national and state political parties here to know their view point on holding or deferring the elections. The main opposition party, PDP is of the view that the coalition government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has let the people down at a time when the state witnessed the worst ever calamity, while as BJP also has almost same views. Talking to Early Times, PDP spokesperson Naeem Akhter said that rehabilitation of the people was the main priority of their party. "We have crisis everywhere. On one hand we have flood crisis and the another crisis is in the form of state government, which has become a roadblock in rehabilitation', Naeem Akhtar said. "The state government's approach and functioning in the present scenario is making the people pay heavily, and as such people are looking for a change and we are with public" he indirectly hinted at holding the elections well in time. "Our party is busy in rehabilitation of people who have been affected in the worst ever floods. We will convey our stand to the team of ECI", he said. General Secretary of BJP Kavinder Gupta opined that the elections should be held on time. He said that only six or seven constituencies are worst affected but the party was in favour of timely elections. "Though the final decision is to be taken by ECI and party will convey its stand", he said. Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) state president Balwant Mankotia favoured holding of elections on time. "Our party has so far not decided, but my personal opinion is that the elections should be held on time. The party will decide soon about timing of elections", he said. However, the ruling parties including Congress and National Conference are divided over holding elections in the state, as the National Conference wants elections to be deferred, while Congress is still indecisive. Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) chief, Prof. Saifudin Soz said that this was welcome step that Deputy Election Commissioner is visiting Jammu and Kashmir to review the possibility of holding elections. "We have difficulties on both sides of holding on time or delay it", he said, adding that in couple of days, party would decide and convey it to the ECI team. National Conference, spokesperson, Junaid Matto said that the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has cleared the party stand that final call would be taken by ECI. "Presently we don't have possibilities of holding elections", he said, adding that though the party has not taken any concrete decision over timing of holding the elections but soon the decision would be taken and conveyed to ECI team, scheduled to visit state. |
