Udhampur, Reasi landslide victims await relief, rehabilitation | | | Kunal Shrivatsa JAMMU, Oct 4: Picking up the thread of life after witnessing mass destruction caused due to incessant rains and landslides which wreaked havoc in far flung areas of Udhampur and Reasi districts, the affected people now await rehabilitation and compensation from the State Government. The affected people are waiting worriedly for adequate compensation to rebuild their damaged houses while the State Government is also giving assurances that the same will be disbursed within shortest possible time. However, locals in higher reaches of Udhampur and Reasi districts who were rendered homeless and lost their fertile land as well as livestock by the worst ever nature's fury who lost as houses, fertile land and livestock are apprehensive that whether they could ever be able to get any administrative help to refurbish their disturbed lives. "We are not sure whether the Government would recompense us or not for our damaged houses and washed out cultivable land…. Even if Government is ready to provide some assistance, the people here are too simple that most of them are not aware of the nitty-gritty involved in applying for the Government aid… This unawareness comes as major hurdle in seeking financial support from the administration," said Hans Raj of village Prand in Panchayat Damnote. Narrating her tale of woes, Hans Raj's wife Billo Devi said that they went through a nightmarish experience as on one side their house got damaged and on the other their crops destroyed completely which forced them to stay in tented accommodation along with their three kids. "For my family, financial aid from Government is of paramount importance but we do not know when and how much assistance we would get which could pave the way to not only reconstruct our damaged house but to restore our fields which right now are under thick layer of piled up silt and boulders," said Billo Devi. It is not only Hans Raj and Billo, who are in doubt but there are several others who are in uncertainty as far as provision of compensation is concerned. With a grim looks on his face, an old aged Rattan Singh pointing towards his landslide hit mud house in Gadsari village of Mongri tehsil in Udhampur district told Early Times that he is completely dependent on Government aid for the damages he sustained as it is next to impossible for a poor person like him to reconstruct the dwelling on his own. "Though my house is not completely damaged but due to the massive mudslides the entire structure has developed huge cracks….I had no other option but to vacate it as it is unsafe to stay there," said Rattan Singh. "Presently I along with my 10 family members are putting up in Gram Sevak's residence… I cannot move back to my own house until it gets repaired… At least seventy-eighty thousand rupees are needed to get back the house in shape but with meager resources I am not capable to go for the restoration work…. For that I have no other option but to wait for the Government aid," he added. |
