Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 5: The Indian Army landed in Kashmir on October 27, 1947, a day after J&K acceded to India as per the constitutional law on the subject. Ever since then, our committed, dedicated and disciplined soldiers have been defending the borders and securing the lives and properties of the people of the state after making supreme sacrifices. Most of the politicians in the Valley are alive because the Army is there. Had the Army not come to the rescue of the civil administration from time to time, there would have been anarchy and bloodshed in the Valley.
Sadly, however, there are leaders in the Valley who blow minor issues out of proportion or make mountain out of a molehill and uses very strong words against the Indian Army, the saviour, overlooking the fact that Kashmir is militant-infested and that there are undesirable elements in Kashmir who create a situation that forces the Army to shoot, as it happened the other day in Chattergam, Budgam. One such Kashmiri leader is none other than the uncouth Mustafa Kamaal, whom his brother Farooq Abdullah and nephew Omar Abdullah frequently field against the Army for petty political gains.
What Kamaal did on Tuesday was highly condemnable and deplorable. He used all kinds of invectives and epithets against the Army, dismissed well-meaning Kashmiri leaders like Agriculture Minister and Democratic Party Nationalist president Ghulam Hassan Mir as touts of the Indian Army and questioned the very sanctity of our election system conveniently forgetting that the NC itself had won 57 seats out of 87 in 1996 and formed the Government and that the Army was there in strength when the Assembly elections were held. He also committed an act of sedition by provoking the people of Kashmir to rise in revolt against India so that Kashmir gets seceded from India.
What did Mustafa Kamaal, who is facing a tough challenge in the Tangmarg Assembly constituency from Ghulam Hassan Mir, say about the Army? He, inter-alia, said: "Army is hell-bent to create uncertainty before polls…The Army stationed in Kashmir kill innocent people…These killers are enjoying impunity under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). First, they kill our innocent people and then they express regret to rub salt into the wounds of victim families. Instead of expressing regret, they should disarm the killers since they know who killed these boys in cold-blood. Army soldiers stationed in Kashmir are trigger-happy and professionals in gunning down innocent people…"
He further said: "A day will come when common people of the Valley will stand together and force India to vacate from the region. People will forget Autonomy and AFSPA. The rank and file in Kashmir will demand complete secession from India and I think incidents of innocent killings are taking us towards that direction…Army is solely responsible for widening the gap between Kashmiri people and India. Army stationed in Kashmir has always made an effort to meddle into the affairs of civilian Government and they (Army) have become habitual of indulging in politics…"
Denouncing Kashmiri leaders with positive attitude like Ghulam Hassan Mir, a bitter critic of the Abdullah dynasty and one who has repeatedly defend the role of the Army, Kamaal shamelessly said: "By disturbing atmosphere in Kashmir before Assembly elections, Army wants to make sure that their stooges (candidates) belonging to different political parties emerge as victorious. These candidates whom Army helps during elections act as pawns and they do everything for them. Former Indian Army chief's statement about a politician who received crores of rupees from Army was an eye-opener for all and people know it well how Army plays politics to accomplish their objectives…"
Had Mustafa Kamaal been a Pakistani national and condemned the Pakistani army as he did in the case of the Army, he would have been shot dead by the Pakistani army then and there. It is only the liberal India where the likes of Kamaal say what they say and go scot-free. In any case, his strong words against the Indian Army are not going to help him and his fallen-from-grace NC in the Assembly elections. If he and the NC wish to garner a few votes in the Valley, they should and must go to the people with positive agenda, otherwise they are destined to bite dust in the election.
