Switzerland, Nov 5: The miserable-looking ass, who perfectly resembles A.A. Milne's gloomy character, was spotted frantically trying to scramble free from an open manhole.
Urs Meyer, from Pratteln in the north of Switzerland, was taking his dog for a walk when he was alerted to the distressed animal.
His pet began barking at the donkey on the other side of the fence at the local park.
The unsuspecting Mr Meyer couldn't believe what he saw.
He said: "My initial reaction was it was a stuffed toy but then I saw it move its ears and shake its head, and realised it was real. I don't know how the manhole cover ended up being moved but the donkey had clearly fallen inside and was stuck there."

The emergency services quickly arrived on the scene, however, it took another hour until they could free the terrified donkey from its self-imposed prison.
Fire brigade spokesman Markus Osterhagen said: "The donkey was lucky it didn't end up falling any deeper into the hole. It was hard enough to get it out as it was.
"We reckon it probably been there all night, and although it had some small cuts from trying to wriggle free, it was otherwise unhurt."
Police in Pratteln managed to track down the owner of the donkey as a local farmer who said the animal had escaped the day before. |
