Early Times Report
MENDHAR, Nov 29: The Congress rally, which was scheduled to be addressed today at O P Hill Stadium here by ex-Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, JKPCC chief Saif-ud-Din Soz and cricketer-turned-politician Mohammad Azharudin, turned out to be a big flop show as all the three remained conspicuous by their absence. Prominent Congress leaders of Mendhar also boycotted the rally, exposing infighting in the party and resentment over fielding ex-PDP leader Murtaza Ahmad Khan from the constituency.
For the past few days, Murtaza and his supporters had been telling people during their election campaigning in Mendhar assembly segment that Azad, Soz and Azharudin would be addressing a public rally at O P Hill Stadium today at 12 noon.
A number of people gathered at the stadium but when none of the three leaders arrived there, they started leaving the venue, criticising Congress and its leaders. MLC Jehangir, who was then made chief guest on the occasion, later spoke on the occasion and asked the people to vote in favour of Murtaza Khan.
The rally was a flop show also because prominent Congress leaders of Mendhar - Zulfikar Ali (PCC general secretary), Zafarullah Azad, Mumtaz (state secretary of Congress Seva Dal) and Praveen Sarwar Khan (district president of women wing, Poonch) -- boycotted it.
Talking to Early Times, Zulfikar said he was a strong candidate of the party from Mendhar assembly segment but "Soz got his name dropped from the list". "In the last Lok Sabha polls, 24,000 people had voted in favour of the Congress candidate due to my personal efforts. I fail to understand what criteria was adopted by the party to give mandate to Murtaza Khan?," he asked.
He said had the mandate been given to him or any other Congress leader, including Zafarullah, Shairaz Azri, Majid Ahmad Khan and Praveen Sarwar, they would have happily worked for the party. "We don't support Murtaza's candidature and won't work for him," Zulfikar declared.
