| Rana trusts none, refuses to constitute provincial body | | Revolt brewing in NC ? | | None dares to complain 'fearing consequences'

JAMMU, Nov 29: Banking heavily on close friendship with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Provincial President of National Conference (NC) for Jammu region Devinder Rana has used this friendship to his advantage and desisted from constituting provincial body of the party for Jammu region.
Insiders maintain Rana was posted as Provincial President of NC for Jammu region by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in January 2013, after elders in the party forced him to drop him from the position of Political Advisor, where he enjoyed unbridled power. After being appointed as Provincial President, Rana was supposed to form provincial body of the party for Jammu region.
Insiders maintain that Rana preferred not to frame the body. They maintain that this has more to do with Rana trusting none in the party and seemingly finding none eligible to complete the team. A party veteran who is considered close to Rana accepted that Rana trust none and hence, is running the party as one man show. He needs none since he believes it would degrade his position and decrease his power in the party, said the veteran leader.
Rana was supposed to elect Provincial Vice-President, Provincial Secretary, Provincial Joint Secretary, Provincial Cashier and Spokesman for the provincial unit of the party but he handpicked people from within party, gave them unconstitutional positions in the party and thus, left seniors high and dry. If the senior party leaders and close aides are to be believed, Rana has promised Omar Abdullah historic performance from Jammu region in the ongoing assembly elections.
From day one, a senior party leader who is in the state body said that Rana sahab has acted as dictator and crushed all voices of dissent in whatever way he could. He maintained that none dares to complain to Omar Abdullah vis-a-vis Rana's dictatorial style of functioning because they know they would be forced to shout-up. This leader further said that some voices of dissent were heard in a recent meeting chaired by Omar Abdullah in Jammu but he plainly told them to work for party instead of complaining.
Omar sahab referred to NC ministers from Kashmir valley and said that Jammu unit was doing much better under the one man leadership of his friend Devinder Singh Rana, added the senior leader. He stressed that if conduct is any indication; Omar too has not disappointed Rana by taking his words as Gospel's truth and desisted from asking him all the important question related to strengthening party in Jammu region.
From old guards to senior party leaders to young guns; none dares to confront Rana, fearing that it may result in Omar getting annoyed with them. Whosoever speaks or vents out his anger is with Journalists and members of two other political parties i.e. BJP and PDP. None listens to them and within a week's time, they are either relegated to 'Chowkidaari' of NC headquarter or forced to quit and join Mufti's bandwagon.
This is followed by Rana using an ex-employee of a state government to tell people across the state in beautifully crafted words that he wanted this position and that position which was denied and hence, he left the party. The employee was once the man working behind the curtains to write stories and handouts, in favour of BJP. If the insider's words are to be believed, NC in Jammu is one man show and no other person's word is taken seriously by the Chief Minister.
Whether or not Rana would ever constitute provincial body is something to be watched out but what is clear is that a number of top ranking leaders would call it a day and join PDP if NC fails in its bid to come to power with BJP. The alliance has already been worked out and a formal announcement would be made on December 24 if BJP gets around 20 seats and NC 17, said another one time close aide of Rana. He said that only NC has the mettle to form government with BJP.
"NC has remained in alliance with BJP in the past. They would do anything to comeback to power. They have the art of sleeping with enemy. The same Omar is these days praising Modi whose father once wanted entire Kashmir to get drowned if they vote for him," said an ex-NC man and now a top BJP leader. |
