Cong candidate slaps on-duty policeman in Kulgam | Sarpanch held along with cash, liquor for voters | | Sumit Sharma ET Report JAMMU/SRINAGAR, Nov 29: Police today arrested a Congress Sarpanch here and recovered cash and liquor from him which he was supposed to distribute among the voters in Gool constituency, while a Congress candidate slapped a policeman in south Kashmir's Kulgam district. Sources told Early Times that Police on a tip -off intercepted the vehicle of the Congress Sarpanch Baldev Singh at Khanikote here and recovered 19 bottles of liquor and Rs 2 lakhs cash from him. During questioning the Sarpanch confessed that he was on way to Gool from Reasi to distribute liquor and cash among the gullible voters to ensure that they cast their ballot in favour of the Congress candidate. Cong candidate slaps policeman Meanwhile, a contesting candidate, Mohammad Amin Bhat of the Congress party slapped a policeman at Devsar when the policeman stopped his workers for frisking. Eyewitnesses said that large number of policemen were deployed at Kelam Gund where former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad was supposed to address an election rally. "The policeman in plain clothes was doing his duty and was frisking people. The frisking process irritated some workers who complained to Bhat. The policeman refused to follow the Bhat's diktat to allow his workers without frisking. Cop's refusal infuriated the Congress candidate and he slapped and dragged him towards the road in full public glare," witnesses said. The policeman who was slapped said: "He (Bhat) manhandled me while I was performing my duty. I will take up the issue with higher authorities." Despite repeated attempts the Congress candidate could not be contacted for his comments. |
