Slight improvement from chill, WD could touch on Dec 13

Srinagar, Dec 9 : There was slight improvement in the weather conditions though sun was playing hide and seek after almost normal minimum temperature in the Kashmir valley.However, people in the Ladakh region continued to freeze as the mercury remained below minus 10 degree. A Meteorological department spokesman said here this afternoon weather will remain dry and cold during the next 24 hours over Jammu and Kashmir.
However, a Western Disturbance (WD) originating in Arabian sea could enter the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The WD is likely to affect the region from December 13, a day before fourth phase of polling will be held in 18 assembly constituencies, spread over Srinagar, Anantnag, Shopian in the Kashmir valley and Samba and Vijaypur in Jammu region.
There was improvement in the weather conditions though icy cold winds continued in the valley, where world famous ski resort of Gulmarg was coldest with minus 3.4 degree, still a notch above normal. Pahalgam, a health resort in south Kashmir witnessed a considerable improvement in the night temperature. Against yesterdays minus 4.4 degree, it was minus 2.4 degree, two notches above normal. Kokernag a tourist resort in south Kashmir and Kupwara in north Kashmir also witnessed above normal temperature. However, at Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir, the mercury was minus 2.4 degree, more than a notch below normal. The summer capital, Srinagar, where life returned to normal today after yesterday strike and restrictions on Prime Ministers Srinagar visit, witnessed improvement.
The night temperature was minus 1 degree against yesterday's minus 1.6 degree. Sun was also out since this morning though playing hide and seek with icy cold winds continued.
