Khrew breaks militancy jinx, records massive polling | | | Muhammad Mukaram
Early Times Report PAMPORE, Dec 9: Breaking the militancy jinx after 28 years, the people of Khrew area of town of Pampore Constituency came out to vote in large numbers. The new wave took many who still believed in boycotting the ballot by a big surprise. The four polling booths housed in Government Boys Higher secondary school witnessed huge turnout while two polling booths in Government Girls higher secondary also recorded a good number of voters. Of nearly 6200 votes at Khrew in both polling stations, over 3500 including male and female, especially first time voters, had lined up outside the polling station throughout the day. Completely ignoring the separatist calls to stay away from the poll process, long queues of enthusiastic voters in Khrew and adjacent villages of Pampore constituency in Pulwama district seemed determined on Tuesday to choose their representatives. The voter mood was festive as most of them said they were out to vote for change. "I have come out to vote because the only thing that can now make any difference to our neglected village is change. This is a chance we do not want to miss it at any cost," Muhammad Rafiq, 32, a voter at Khrew polling station, told Early Times. The National Conference new coin Yawar Masoodi, who is contesting first assembly elections in Pampore constituency, is pitted against two times winner Peoples Democratic Party candidate Zahoor Ahmed Mir. Another voter echoed similar views, "I have voted for change in the Khrew village as the incumbent PDP MLA Zahoor Ahmed Mir has totally ignored the Khrew area. We have given two times chance to PDP Candidate but this time we want to see Yawar masoodi in the assembly," said Ghulam Hassan, NC supporter. Undeterred by threats and boycott calls, people stood in queues in Khrew town, "it is clear message from me as I am not voting for National Conference. I voted only for Yawar Masoodi, because he is from Khrew town and he has lot of pains for this area," Sheikh Jahangir Ahmed told Early Times. "We assembled here from 8 am to vote. We want khrew area gets developed on modern lines. But it is not possible without choosing our good representative. So we have decided to participate in polls," a group of youth in Khrew told Early Times. In polling booth No. 04 Khrew, 775 votes were cast out of 1112 including female. In booth No.08, 539 votes were cast out of 911 and similar trend was recorded in other polling booths in the other. Almost 46.24 per cent votes have been polled in Pampore Constituency in the third phase of elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Out of 78690 votes, 36338 including men and women votes were cast in Pampore Constituency. |
