Sopore defies Geelani, opts for ballot | | | ET Report Jammu, Dec 9: Geelani has been rejected by the people in his home constituency Sopore, hitherto considered bastion of separatism and fort of Sayed Ali Shah Geelani. The voting percentage here has broken the past records. It is also about the realisation in the Kashmir of having being exploited by the separatists. Off all the constituencies going to the polls, Sopore was most watched out. Anti-India rabble-rouser Geelani has been consistently trying to prevent the people of this constituency from going to the polls. He has been black mailing them on the emotive issues like Azadi, anti-India rhetoric and anything under the sky to brainwash the voters from going to the polls, It did work for some time, but the people had to pay heavy cost on account of the development. The neighbouring areas had developed fast and this also started weighing in the minds of the voters along with a realisation that utopian propaganda of Kashmir getting free from India was never ever going to be realised. In the violent protests in the Kashmir the town and this constituency has suffered heavily, mainly on being provoked by the separatists who saw in the teenagers a readily available fodder to achieve their nefarious design which don't have any connect or concern for the locals. The fact that Geelani has himself being legislator of this constituency for three terms-means 18-yr- but nothing tangible on development front is seen here though he continues to get pension of a former legislator and has not only official accommodation but even private houses in and outside the state. The BJP factor also played a part. The BJP has been galvainisng its cadre and has put in all the resources at its command to bring about change in the voting percentage. This made its opponents nervous who also trooped in their political foot soldiers. "Sopore can't be treated as a symbol of separatism anymore. Everyone has progressed and even separatists have fortunes. Only we are left to fend for ourselves. This time it will change and it's changing in a big way," said Naseer Ahmad, resident of Sopore. |
