BARAMULLA, Dec 9: Amidst cold conditions voters tricked out in good numbers in most of the areas of Sangrama constituency of this North Kashmir district to cast their vote today. Since morning the polling stations wore a festive look with large queues of voters seen outside these stations. Reports and officials said that 56.15 percent voting was recorded in this constituency breaking the previous record of 46.61 percent in 2008. The effect of the boycott calls was very much minimal here.
At a polling station in Government Higher Secondary School Kreeri, 15 percent votes were cast in the first hour of polling. Out of 710 registered voters here 127 had casted their vote by 9:00 AM.
"You can witness such long queues here. We want a change in every sphere. We want to prosper, that is why I am waiting for my turn since morning," said Abdul Ahad Mir, outside a polling station here.
In another village of the constituency Wagoora, women were seen waiting in long queues to cast their vote. Here National conference has fielded a senior party worker who enjoys a good fame and people were seen enthusiastic to vote for him. "I have voted for NC, our representative deserves this. He is a great leader and will highlight our issue," said a woman voter here, wishing anonymity. In Nowpora Jagir, which is one of the densely populated villages of the constituency, in most of the polling stations here brisk polling was witnessed since morning. Reportedly this village had boycotted the previous assembly elections in 2008.
At a polling station here in Government Girls Middle School 58 percent votes were cast during the day. People who cast their vote here said they want to select a particular candidate to ensure development in their respective area.
"If we will not vote then a candidate irrespective of our choice will get elected who will work less for us, we have voted to get our area developed. We know our representative will work for the core issue like electricity, roads, employment and water. He is a young leader and he will do wonders" said Shabir Ahmad Bhat, a voter in Nowpora.
If locals are to be believed, the backwardness of the constituency was the main driving force for the people to vote in droves. The voters said that villages of the constituency are facing huge unemployment and is under developed.
"Last assembly election we had boycotted but still a leader got elected. We have many problems in our village like poor road connectivity, scarcity of water and electricity.
To get these problems addressed we have decided to support our candidate," said Amir Ahmad a voter from Sangrama. Ten candidates are in fray in Sangrama constituency with most of the candidates contesting on independent seat.
Political analysts believe that real fight is between NC, Congress and PDP in the constituency.
