Erstwhile Doda distt no more strong bastion of Azad | Muslims played key role in victory of BJP candidates on 4 seats | | Asif Iqbal Naik
Early Times Report
Kishtwar, Dec 26: Erstwhile Doda district, once the strong bastion of Congress group led by former Chief Minister and leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, is no more a strong bastion for him as the area is now represented by BJP on four seats out of the six in Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban districts. Out of six seats, four seats of Kishtwar, Doda, Bhaderwah and Ramban were won by BJP in just concluded Assembly elections while Congress could manage to retain only two seats of Inderwal and Banihal out of five seats represented by them in 2008. The BJP stood 2nd in Inderwal and also got a good chunk of votes in Banihal where the party remains on the 3rd number. In Kishtwar, BJP candidate Sunil Sharma, who defeated National Conference Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo, by 2852 votes got over 7000 Muslim votes mostly from Muslim dominated belt of Marwah and Warwan from where the party get around 2000 Muslim votes. BJP's Tariq Hussain Keen lost his seat to Congress candidate Ghulam Mohammad Saroori who retianed the Inderwal seat for 3rd term. Keen got approximately 10000 Muslim votes from areas like his home village of Bhunzwah and its adjoining areas. He also got good chunk of Muslim votes from Gandow, Thatri, Drabshala and Sarthal areas of the constituency. The most surprising win of BJP comes from Doda constituency which is mostly dominated by Muslim voters. BJP's Shakti Parihar got approximately 12000 Muslim votes, that played key role in BJP's win from Doda. Shakti Parihar defeated two stalwarts sitting R & B Minister Abdul Majid Wani of Congress and National Conference leader and former MoS Home Khalid Najeeb. Shakti not only managed to get votes from rural and far flung areas of Doda constituency but also from city areas. Similarly BJP got over 5000 Muslim votes in Bhaderwah constituency which was also represented by Congress stalwart Ghulam Nabi Azad during his tenure as Chief Minister of the state. BJP's Daleep Singh Parihar defeated former Power Minister and leader of Congress Legislative Party Mohammad Sharif Naiz. An equal number of Muslims also voted for BJP Ramban candidate Neelam Singh Langah. The defeated BJP candidate from Banihal also got nearly 9000 Muslim votes from the constituency. It was not only BJP that dented the Congress votes, Peoples Democratic Party also increased its performace and increases its vote bank in the Congress dominated erstwhile Doda district. PDP candidate Bashir Ahmed Runyal from Banihal, Abdul Majeed Butt from Inderwal and Mehboob Iqbal from Bhaderwal also got good votes, while the performance of Kishtwar PDP candidate was also good, though the party got lesser votes as compared to the 2008 election. The local people attributed the emergence of BJP and improved in performance of PDP in the region to bad governance by the National Conference-Congress led coalition government. The area is still lacking far behind on development front and there is only 18 to 20 pc road connectivity, besides many villages are without electricity and communication even after 66 years of independence. The people are, however, hopeful that the new government will look into the problems faced by the people of the region and redress them. |
