Gupta takes U-turn 'won't rejoin BJP'

Jammu, Dec 26: Soon after National Conference and People's Democratic Party (PDP) distanced themselves from Bharatiya Janta Party and consensus eluded the government formation in Jammu and Kashmir, the Independent candidate from Udhampur Pawan Gupta took a U-turn today and refused to rejoin BJP.
As the Independent MLAs can play a major role in the government formation in Jammu and Kashmir, Gupta seems to have made a move to strike a deal with any party which stakes claim to form the government. Gupta contested elections independently, defeating two time National Panther Party MLA Balwant Mankoita and BJP candidate Pawan Khajuria with huge margin of votes. Indications made by Pawan Gupta not to go with BJP can make him the man of the moment and can get whatever he wants.
Pertinently, riding on Modi wave, after BJP's land slide victory in Lok Sabha and assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra, the over confident state unit of BJP lost two seats in Jammu, Nagrota and Bishnah.
Former BJP leaders Pawan Gupta and Baldev Raj Sharma had said that J&K BJP is not safe in the hands as BJP State president and Member Parliament (MP) Jugal Kishore Sharma and MLA Ashok Khajuria have always played a dubious role for their petty gains.
Pawan Gupta had stated that Jugal Kishore Sharma remained a sole MLA from BJP in Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly from 2002 to 2008 and exercised his votes in election to Rajya Sabha seats and Legislative Council. In whose favour, Sharma polled his vote, as there was no official candidate of the BJP nor officially supported candidates, he had questioned.
"During the election to the Rajya Sabha seats in J&K in 2009 in which BJP supported AV Gupta two votes from BJP came short in favour of supported candidate", he said, adding that the issue of cross voting was put under carpet at that time.
He pointed out Ashok Khajuria revealed to file a defamation case against the outgoing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that Khajuria met him to seek personal favours.
