No consensus on alliance with BJP: PDP

SRINAGAR, Dec 26: As speculations were rife in Jammu and Kashmir today that People's Democratic Party (PDP), which emerged as the single largest party by securing 28 seats in 87 member House after the results of the recently held assembly polls were declared earlier this week, would stitch an alliance with Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) which bagged 25 seats, the PDP insiders denied that PDP has reached on any consensus with BJP over the formation of next dispensation in the state.
Sources told Early Times that PDP legislators are busy exploring the options and nothing has been finalized till date. "One of our leaders had met the BJP senior leader Ram Madhav in Srinagar and both of them held a casual discussion. No modalities were discussed to form the new government in JK," said a senior PDP leader.
He said final decision about whom would PDP go with lies with the party patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. "Till Mufti Sahab doesn't authorize someone on party's behalf to talk to any party till then people should not pay heed to rumors. PDP is in no hurry to form the government. If BJP or NC have got the numbers let them stake the claim and form the government," the leader added.
The PDP spokesman Nayeema Mehjoor while talking to Early Times said, "Nothing concrete has come up so far. Deliberations among party legislators and the senior party leaders are on and we are trying to reach on the consensus."
Asked has PDP kept the option of joining hands with National Conference still open, Mehjoor said, "We have kept all options open and haven't said no to anyone."
Sources said that a few PDP leaders firmly believe that party should join hands with its old ally Congress and should try to rope in a few independents and Sajad Lone led Peoples Conference which has bagged two seats.
Another PDP leader distanced himself from the statement of the national spokesperson of the PDP Dr Sameer Kaul that talks with the BJP are on and party patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed would be the Chief Minister of JK for the next six years. "It seems it's the personal opinion of Dr Sameer Kaul. This is not the official stand of the PDP," the leader added.
He claimed that PDP has not ruled out the possibility of taking support from the National Conference, which secured 15 seats. "We are in no hurry to grab the power. We want to take a decision which is people friendly," he added.
The PDP leader claimed that outgoing Chief Minister and NC working president Omar Abdullah was called to New Delhi by BJP top brass on Thursday to pressurize PDP to come forward. "Do you think that Omar had gone to Delhi to take a break from Chillai Kalan? He (Omar) even postponed his London trip. Had NC legislators not expressed their displeasure and had they not threatened to quit the party Omar would have entered into an alliance with BJP," the PDP leader claimed.
Despite hectic political activities continuing in JK for the fourth consecutive day today none of the parties could reach on the consensus over the government formation in the state. PDP's "wait and watch" approach has put everyone in a tight spot.
