SRINAGAR, Dec 26: Three days after the results of 2014 assembly elections were announced Governor Narendra Nath Vohra today shot letters to People's Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) for discussions on the formation of next government in the state.
Raj Bhawan has shot letters to heads of both BJP and PDP so that discussions are held with the formation of the government. This development has somewhat ended the suspense that has engulfed the people of state vis-a-vis formation of new government in the state.
Sources told Early Times that since PDP and BJP have emerged the two single largest parties it is quite natural that leaders of these parties have been invited for discussions on government formation by the Governor. The exact timing of the meeting of the leaders of both these parties with the Governor is yet to be known.
"It may be easy for the BJP leaders to visit the Raj Bhawan tomorrow since the party leaders are based in Jammu these days. On the other hand it may take some time for the PDP leaders to reach Jammu since they are in Srinagar at present. The inclement weather may also play a spoilsport with respect to the meeting of PDP leaders with the Governor," said sources.
In the meantime, PDP Patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has sought a meeting with Prime Minister, Narendra Modi with regard to the formation of PDP-BJP government in the state. Mufti is expected to fly to New Delhi tomorrow and hold discussions with the PM with respect to the government formation in the state.
Sources said that both Mufti and Modi are likely to deliberate on various issues that hold key to the formation of government in the state. One cannot rule out the possibility of drawing up of a blue print by both these leaders so that the formation of government takes a practical shape. Their deliberations may be followed by drawing up of a Common Minimum Programme (CMP) for the smooth functioning of the new government.
Meeting between Mufti and Modi got finalized only when BJP's General Secretary Ram Madhav carried out parleys with senior PDP leader and Member of Parliament Muzaffar Hussain Beigh here. Both Madhav and Beigh at least met twice since last evening and interacted on broader contours of a possible alliance between PDP and BJP so that the next government is formed in the state and that too as early as possible.
Talking to journalists after his meeting with Beigh, Madhav said that deliberations with PDP with regard to government formation are in an infancy stage. He said that the party is ready to give up its ideology with regard to Jammu & Kashmir since its primary aim is to provide a stable government to the state.
The BJP General Secretary said that development would be the main driving force of the next government in the state. He said since deliberations have just started it would not be opportune for him that who could be the next chief minister of the state. He added that BJP has the mandate to play an important role in the government formation in the state.
Pertinently the recent assembly elections have thrown up a hung house in the state with no party getting simple majority to form the next government. PDP has emerged as the single largest party with 28 members with BJP coming second with 25 legislators. National Conference has finished third with 15 members with Congress coming fourth with 12 legislators. Independents and others have won seven seats in the elections.
Over the past few days various developments have taken place with respect to the government formation. Despite having 15 members, NC working President Omar Abdullah sees a role in the new government and in this regard he met BJP leaders in the union capital on Thursday. However, Omar is facing a rebellion of a sort within his party since some of his legislators have criticized his bonhomie with BJP.
Omar also offered his party's support to PDP for the formation of new government in the state. PDP has overall maintained silence on the issue with its senior leader Muzaffar Hussain Beigh engaged in parleys with BJP leaders. Congress has been urging PDP Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to lead the new government in state with it ready to offer an unconditional support.
