BJP-PDP lock horns over Art 370, rotational CM | Ram Madhav praises Mufti, keeps options open | | Javaid Naikoo Early Times Report Jammu/SRINAGAR, Dec 26: People's Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) holding "secret talks" to forge an alliance in Jammu and Kashmir ostensibly hit a roadblock today, sources told Early Times. They said the major issues both the parties are locking horns with each other are Article 370 and rotational chief ministership. The BJP has reportedly told the PDP leadership that it has to give in its demand for rotational chief minister and not holding a debate over Article 370, which gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir. The BJP point man on Kashmir, Ram Madhav has reportedly told the PDP leadership that BJP can't put its core issues on backburner for the sake of government formation in JK. BJP's nationalist approach, according to the sources, in Kashmir has made PDP uncomfortable. Sources said, the PDP patron Mufti Sayeed himself is in favour of going ahead with the alliance with some minor changes, it is PDP President Mehbooba Mufti's camp that is opposing it. The conflicting view is acting as stumbling block in the government formation. The BJP is also insisting to have the Chief Minister's post for the first three years. However, PDP is averse to it. "PDP can't dictate terms all along. It's the PDP which desperately needs us than the other way round. We have established our self as the supreme party in the Jammu and are expanding our base in the Kashmir. If PDP doesn't form the government at this point of time it would get disintegrated in next six years," said a BJP leader. The PDP leadership has reportedly decided to work on the two pronged strategy. They are trying to keep BJP in the loop and are using their network in the Delhi to ensure that NC doesn't clinch a deal with the BJP. Sources said that there is every possibility about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed holding a one to one meeting once the decks are cleared. Pertinently, senior PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Beigh held a marathon meeting with the BJP senior leader Ram Madhav in Srinagar last night and both the leaders discussed various options. Sources said that a few PDP leaders are inclined towards BJP as they know that JK is a "poor state" and recent floods have further aggravated the situation, and state needs huge financial assistance to come out of the mess. Sources said that Sajad Gani Lone and Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen who also met Ram Madhav have assured their support to BJP. Pertinently, Ram Madhav who briefed media persons here today also while indicated that PDP-BJP alliance is on cards. 'PDP is an important stakeholder as it has got a major mandate which is worthy to consider for BJP. Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has five-decade long political career, he is a respected figure, not only in the state but across the country as well,' he said. Ram Madhav also said that the talks with PDP are still at initial stage and added that National Conference also has got substantial number of seats and NC was a part of the erstwhile NDA regime. |
