NDA Govt failed to end Ceasefire violations: Azad
1/4/2015 10:48:35 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 4: Congress today accused the Narendra Modi-led government of failing to put an end to the ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the international border in Jammu and Kashmir, saying the lives of people living in border areas have become miserable.
"The NDA government has miserably failed to put a halt to the ceasefire violations by Pakistan as was promised by it to the people of the country," Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said here.
"The persistent ceasefire violations have made the life of people living in border areas miserable and they are forced to lead a life marked by fear, uncertainty and mental stress," the senior Congress leader said.
Alleging that the NDA government remained insensitive towards the plight and trauma of the people, he said, "How long people of the Jammu and Kashmir and the country will be fed with rhetoric's and hollow promises as the ceasefire violations go on unabated."
Azad said the time has come to act and silence the Pakistani guns as the residents of border areas since July last year have suffered unimaginable loss to lives, property, livestock, crops, due to unprovoked Pakistani firing and shelling.
"NDA government should at least be cognizant of the plight and sufferings of the lakhs of people living in the border belt who have been forced to leave their homes and hearths in an extremely chilly weather conditions," Azad said.
He said voters of the country had voted for NDA after it promised the people that it would put an end to the Pakistani aggression.
"Every citizen of this country voted NDA government to power to fulfil its promise of acting very strongly against Pakistan to bring an end to the incessant ceasefire violations. However, irony is that there have been a consistent uptrend in ceasefire violations ever since the NDA government has taken over," he said.
He said more than 560 ceasefire violations have been witnessed in the year 2014 leading to deaths and injuries to scores of jawans and civilians, in addition to the other losses and hardships suffered by residents of border areas.
"The NDA government must show caliber, capability and finesse to bring an end to the ceasefire violations in the interest of the lakhs of citizens who are facing the brunt of unprovoked Pakistani firing, as has been promised by the BJP leadership before the Lok Sabha elections," he said.
Questioning the NDA government, Azad asked why the ceasefire violations have not come to an end after the BJP came to power, as was promised so "ostentatiously" by the Prime Minister and the BJP before the Lok Sabha elections.
Asserting that every citizen of the country and state deserves what has been promised by the BJP, Azad said that instead of fulfilling its electoral promises of acting very strongly against Pakistan for the continued ceasefire violations, the NDA government has only succeeded in making ceasefire violations endemic to the border belt of J&K.
"If the ceasefire violations have risen to an unprecedented scale after the NDA government came to power in the Centre, how can one draw the conclusion that we are having a strong government in place which is being taken seriously by the Pakistani establishment," said Azad.
Expressing grief and shock on the death of jawans and civilians in Pakistani firing, he said that "it is painful and heart-rending that our jawans and civilians are laying their lives with regular frequency on the borders due to Pakistani firing". While condemning Pakistan for resorting to unprovoked firing on Indian border outposts and civilian areas, Azad called upon the Centre to give a forceful, appropriate and proportionate response to the Pakistani misadventures so that the continued hostilities and ceasefire violations on the borders come to an end.
