| Growing border skirmishes may delay repeal of AFSPA in JK | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 4: The growing border tension is likely to defer repeat of AFSPA from the state. Repeted cease fire violations by Pakistan have claimed four people including three security personnel. At least twenty persons sustained injuries. In this backdrop, it will not be easy for the BJP to accept conditions set by the PDP for government formation. Official sources said that in view of growing difficulties being created by terrorists in Pakistan and Pak forces have opted for targeting Indian border villages and border outposts.During the last three days' of gun and mortar attacks on border villages in Samba and Hiranagar areas over 1,000 people have been forced to flee to safer places when already some 5,000 families had taken shelter in safe places, away from their home and hearth, since May last when the Pakistani troops intensified their attack on Indian border outposts and villages. Sources said that since Pakistani agencies were trying to push groups of militants into Jammu and Kahsmir which may kick up added conflict on the LOC and on the IB it was not feasible for the Government to lift AFSPA from the state. BJP sources said that in the interest of peace and maintenance of law and order it would be better for the PDP if it keeps its demand for lifting of the AFSPA on a back burner. The party sources said that once the security scenario improved in the state the BJP led NDA Government would concede the PDP,s demand after receiving approval from the top Army authorities. The BJP leaders made it clear that lifting of the AFSPA is not a political issue adding that it is an issue that has to be addressed by the Armed forces. These leaders said that security forces and the Army have succeeded in reducing the level of militancy related violence and incidents only after a large number of militants were either eliminated or arrested. They are of the opinion that lifting of the AFSPA at this juncture could prove counter productive. And the PDP leadership should have no apprehensions about the security forces misusing the AFSPA after strict inst ructions have gone to the Army and the paramilitary forces to respect human rights at any cost. |
