MENDHAR, Jan 4: Mendhar town and its several villages are faced with acute shortage of drinking water as most of the government schemes in the tehsil are lying defunct. The water supply tank at Dachhal, which has the capacity of 50,000 gallons, is lying defunct for the past over three years as a result of which the areas, which were getting water from it, are faced with severe water crisis, according to official sources. The prestigious Kishti Balnoi Water Lift Scheme, which was supplying water to at least six water tanks in the town for its further supply to the people, was lying unused for the past nearly one decade, sources said.Pathana Pir to Chhatral Water Lift Scheme, Salwa Water Tank, Bagla Top Water Tank and Lower Chhajla Lift Scheme were also lying unused for the past many years, causing immense problems to the locals, the sources added. At present, Sonewali Bawli in Mendhar town was the main source of drinking water but its water was not clean as it was without any cover. Locals have urged the authorities concerned to cover the bawli so that people get clean drinking water. Sources said the contractors, who had constructed these water tanks, were yet to get their payments. |
